I don’t think the modern world has witnessed a female dictator as sociopathic as Sheikh Hasina. Sure, there were heartless, powerful women like Argentina’s Isabel Perón, the Philippines’s Imelda Marcos and Romania’s Elena Ceauşescu. But the latter two were First Ladies and wielded power through their husbands and the former was a puppet of José López Rega.
Hasina is a step above them. She has all the traits of a Benito Mussolini or a Paul Kagame and she went one step further by folding in North Korea’s cult politics centred on ‘father and family’ into the mix.
Which is why, the people needed to go for a bloody uprising to bring her down. And yet, Hasina has not softened one bit. Not being able to hold on to power after using maximum force and the way the party workers and leaders have gone into hiding should be an indication of how well-liked this grand old party named Awami League is among the people. But no, she just doesn’t get it — she is bloodthirsty as ever, if not more.
And after losing the power they have cherished for so many years, there is no attempt at introspection and redress. Mindlessly and shamelessly, they are just going about attempting to regain power. So far, they attempted communal clashes, caused disarray in the army, went for random vandalism and industrial unrest, and tacitly caused an impasse in every state institution. Sat in her plush bungalow in Lutyens Delhi, she is instructing her men to set fire, literally and metaphorically, in Bangladesh. Only a consummate terrorist can advise such a thing.
But Hasina’s evil eyes and ways will not prevail in our soil — the self-sacrifice of the thousands of people in the 36 days of July will not go in vain. If needed, the people will do it again, but they won’t allow someone like Hasina to be back in power again.
Bangladeshi's will jump to defend their freedom. They may run out of bullets for the gun but our people will not run out of bodies to stand in front of the barrel — with arms stretched wide.

Sajeeb Wazed Joy, son of former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, has hired a prominent Washington DC lobbying firm, Stryk Global Diplomacy (SGD, formerly Sonoran Policy Group), as part of his efforts to influence US policymakers. This move comes after Hasina’s resignation and flight to India on August 5th, following the toppling of her Awami League government.
Documents obtained and verified by Netra News show that Joy signed a six-month contract with SGD, paying $200,000 upfront (around 2.4 crores in Bangladeshi taka). In return, the lobbyists will “engage with the Executive and Legislative Branches of the United States government to provide a unique insight on the current issues facing Bangladesh.”
The agreement and an amendment were filed under the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA) on September 12th 2024, through Wazed Consulting Inc., a company owned entirely by Joy. The lobbying firm, led by Christian Bourge and Robert Stryk, has deep ties to former US President Donald Trump, with both having served as advisers during his 2016 campaign.
Joy’s hiring of SGD follows a history of engaging US lobbyists. In 2005, he paid $720,000 to Alcalde & Fay on behalf of the US Awami League. At that time, Rep. Gary Ackerman had expressed concern over Bangladesh’s political direction, comparing it to Pakistan under General Musharraf and warning that mainstream parties’ weakening could bolster Islamist forces.
Following the ouster of his mother, Joy has emerged as the spokesperson of the Awami League while most leaders of the party are in hiding or jail. Given Joy’s recent public statements, these efforts may focus on portraying a post-Awami League Bangladesh as being overrun by Islamist extremists.●

A Bangladeshi teenager has been killed by the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) at the Dhantala border in Thakurgaon. This incident occurred early this morning (September 9) in the area of pillar number 393 at the Dhantala border.
The deceased, Shring Joyanta Lahiri, was the son of Mahadeb from the Bototli village in the Dhantala Union. According to relatives, the BSF has taken the teenager's body.

As soon as Sorna reached the waterbody near the Lalarchak border in Kulaura, she became terrified upon seeing the BSF (Border Security Force) and cried out, "Don't kill us, take us under the law." Instead of receiving a reply, her chest was pierced by a BSF bullet. Seeing the gun aimed at her, Sorna turned around. The bullet entered through the right side of her chest and exited the other side. At that moment, Sorna said, "Mother, let go of my hand, I won't survive anymore. Save your life." Sorna's brother Pintu Das shared these heart-wrenching details with Manabzamin (a news outlet) through tears, after hearing the story from his mother when she regained consciousness.
The village of Kalnigor in Juri Upazila is now engulfed in mourning. This once peaceful locality is shattered by grief. Sorna Das, a young girl from this village, has passed away, falling victim to the bullets of the BSF while trying to cross the border. Her family, including her father Parendra Das and mother Sanjita Rani Das, are in deep shock, fainting repeatedly from the tragedy. Sorna was the youngest of three brothers and two sisters. She was bright in her studies and a lively presence at her school. Her classmates are devastated by the premature loss. Sorna, an 8th-grade student at Nirod Bihari High School, had set out on Sunday night, September 1st, with her mother to cross the Lalarchak border in Sharifpur Union of Kulaura. Their destination was her maternal uncle’s house in Shanichhara village of Tripura. One of Sorna’s brothers had been living with their uncle Kartik Das’s family for a long time, and Sorna had longed to see her brother and visit her uncle’s home.
Sorna's father, Parendra Das, said that on Sunday morning, her mother and Sorna left home intending to go to India. By Monday morning, they had not yet arrived at their uncle’s house. After much searching, they managed to rescue Sorna’s mother from Shamshernagar with the help of a military officer. Later that Monday afternoon, the family was informed of Sorna's death through the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB).
Sorna’s mother, Sanjita Rani Das, recounted that they had fallen into the hands of traffickers near the border, who, along with another family from Chittagong, tried to push them into India. As they approached the border, the sound of gunfire rang out, and she collapsed to the ground. Her daughter’s body was riddled with bullets from the heartless BSF. After saying this, Sanjita Rani Das fainted again.
Local ward member of West Juri UP (Union Parishad), Madan Mohan Das, said, "She was a very gentle and well-mannered girl, admired throughout the village." Acting chairman of West Juri UP, Sirajul Islam, expressed, "Who gave them the right to shoot and kill? We do not support border killings. How many more bodies like Felani's will fall at the border? If India considers us a friend, they must stop this."
Sorna's classmates, Susmita, Purba, Banya, and Sipa, shared that she was good in her studies and active in sports. She was the life of the class. They wondered why the forces of a friendly country were so ruthless, their hearts not trembling even once as they fired.
Forty-five hours later, on Tuesday evening, Sorna’s body was handed over through the Chatlapur checkpoint by the BSF. Her last rites were performed on Wednesday.

Assalamu Alaikum,
Today, we commemorate the first month since Bangladesh achieved its second independence. Hundreds of students and people from all walks of life made the ultimate sacrifice for one of the most glorious revolutions in history.
They ended the 15-year tyrannical rule of the fascist Sheikh Hasina, under whose leadership a brutal genocide took place. Sheikh Hasina fled the country, leaving behind a corrupt state and a fragile economy. It is now our responsibility to restore Bangladesh to its full glory.
Today, I remember the brave young people, workers, laborers, and professionals who embraced death in their struggle against the heinous fascist forces. I also pay tribute to the journalists who were killed during the movement. I express my deepest respect to all those who became martyrs in this revolution.
I salute the thousands who were injured, those who were permanently disabled due to life-threatening injuries, and those who lost their sight.
Last month, when I was entrusted with the responsibility of leading the interim government, I accepted this duty, despite my limitations, inspired by the selfless sacrifice of Abu Sayeed, Mugdha, and all the known and unknown martyrs.
Our young revolutionaries have instilled a new dream of building a prosperous Bangladesh in the hearts of the people, and I am committed to making that dream a reality. Inspired by the martyrs' sacrifices, we aim to change the course of history and usher in a new era.

You pledged to realize your dreams. The dreams you painted on the walls of both cities and rural areas still stand before us in a vibrant display of colors.
During the revolution, you set aside your studies, spent sleepless nights in anxiety with your friends, and bid farewell to each other as you took to the streets to resist the cruel regime. After the revolution, you protected the religious minority communities and their places of worship, and took on the responsibility of managing traffic across the country. I understand that your studies have suffered greatly. Now, it is time to return to your education. Schools, colleges, and universities have reopened. I urge you to return to your classrooms and campuses because we need a well-educated and skilled generation to reap the benefits of the revolution.
It has been only a month since the interim government took office. Yet, despite this short time, we have initiated significant reforms to achieve the true goals of the revolution. Our first priority is to ensure justice and accountability for the killings that took place in July and August. We have invited the United Nations Human Rights Office to conduct an independent and impartial investigation into the genocide. They have arrived and started their work.
Additionally, I have consulted top international legal experts about forming a tribunal to prosecute individuals accused of crimes against humanity during July and August. We also aim to extradite the murderers and recover the funds embezzled by corrupt politicians and bureaucrats during the era of dictatorship. Discussions with specialized institutions are already underway.
One of our primary responsibilities is to ensure free medical treatment for the thousands of people who were severely injured during the revolution. Countless young students lost their eyesight due to the rubber bullets fired at them by Hasina's thugs. We will do everything in our power to restore their sight. We are continuously working to create a comprehensive list of the martyrs and the injured. The main list has been compiled, and now we are gathering information about those whose bodies were taken to distant places. Hundreds of people who require long-term treatment due to their injuries, as well as the families of the martyrs, will be cared for by a foundation that is nearing completion. We will never forget those whose martyrdom gave birth to a new Bangladesh.
Recently, we signed the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance. This marks our international commitment to ending the "culture of disappearances" that was established by the dictatorship. Separately, we are forming a commission to investigate every enforced disappearance that took place during the 15 years of fascist rule. To the families who have waited in agony for years to reunite with their missing fathers, husbands, sons, and brothers, we share in your pain.
The torture chambers have been shut down. Very soon, we will learn more about the suffering and agony endured by our brothers and sisters who were victims of enforced disappearances.
In my speech to the nation at the end of last month, I outlined the key reforms our government has undertaken so far. We have been continuously meeting with political parties, editors, business leaders, civil society figures, and diplomats. They have expressed support for our reform efforts. We are also overwhelmed by the immense support we have received from our foreign friends. Our brave and patriotic expatriates are also engaged in the efforts to rebuild the nation. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to them all.
On this solemn and poignant day, I express my infinite gratitude to the families of the martyrs and the injured individuals. I will invite every family of the martyrs to the capital, where I will meet them in the coming days. I want to assure them that we will never betray the dreams of the martyrs.
We are moving forward. Our greatest challenge now is to heal the wounds inflicted by the misrule and dictatorship. To do this, we need unity and coordination.
We pledge today that as a nation, we will not let the blood of the martyrs and the sacrifices of our injured brothers and sisters go in vain. We will not squander the opportunity they have created for us. On this day of remembrance, we renew our commitment to building the new Bangladesh that they dreamed of.

BJP legislator Nitesh Rane delivered an incendiary speech, stating, "I will enter mosques and kill Muslims." This provocative statement, made during a public gathering, has led to severe criticism. The incident was reported by Hindustan Times. After the video of his speech circulated widely on social media, Ahmednagar police filed two cases against him, seemingly compelled to take action.
On Friday, at a meeting in Ahmednagar in support of Ramgiri Maharaj, Nitesh Rane said, "If anyone speaks against Ramgiri Maharaj, I will enter the mosque and hunt down Muslims. Keep that in mind."
Meanwhile, Asaduddin Owaisi's party, All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen (AIMIM), strongly condemned the incident. The party's leader, Imtiaz Jaleel, said, "Ramgiri Maharaj's comments are part of a political conspiracy. Action should be taken against him."
The party's spokesperson, Waris Pathan, added, "In Ahmednagar, BJP legislator Nitesh Rane is openly threatening to enter mosques and kill Muslims one by one. He is spreading hatred against Muslims in public meetings. Before the Assembly elections, BJP is trying to spread communal hatred in Maharashtra. Based on the FIR, Rane should be taken into police custody immediately."
Amid the controversy, BJP claimed that Nitesh Rane's comments do not represent the party's views. The party's spokesperson, Tuhin Sinha, has strongly criticized Rane's remarks.
An Indian police officer informed the news agency PTI that "two FIRs have been registered against Nitesh Rane at Shrirampur and Topkhana police stations, about 260 kilometers away from Mumbai, for criminal intimidation, deliberately disturbing peace, and hurting religious sentiments."

For the last few days, a group has been trying to provoke the students of the Bangladesh University of Professionals (BUP), a public university run by the Bangladesh Armed Forces. That group is trying to incite the students into clashing with their faculty, most of whom are members of the armed forces. Yesterday, a section of BUP students corralled their teachers and the VC — all of whom are army officers — on the campus and badly abused them. This happened even after the students’ demands were met by the university management. The teachers and the military personnel on duty handled the situation with great patience and discretion. And today, a section of BUP students tried to block the entry to Mirpur Cantonment, where the BUP campus is located, and vandalised structures. They were provided logistical support by the local Awami League men, all to pass it off as an incident of the army cracking down on innocent, harmless, unarmed students. It must be reiterated that the BUP students are doing this even after their demands are met. Then over the weekend, a high-ranking army officer came to Dhaka without taking the mandatory approval to leave to his station to secretly meet with someone. That high-ranking officer has now been quarantined. Meanwhile, Muhammad Yunus, the chief adviser to the interim government, is being peppered with forged letters from army personnel conveying their grievances about their colleague. On review, it appears that all the claims mentioned in the letters against the armed forces members are bogus and must be viewed as an attempt by the group to sow discord within the army. Each of these events is interconnected and cannot be viewed as isolated incidents. A foreign intelligence agency and supporters of the previous Awami League government are trying their level best to overthrow the current interim government and create instability within the country's armed forces. I urge everyone to exercise caution and not fall into this group’s trap. We should think twice before reacting to any news as that is the only way we can thwart the evil plans of the conspirators.

What a tragic and heartbreaking incident! A chilling video shows the police loading bullet-riddled bodies one by one onto a pedal van. After loading, the bodies are covered with a discarded banner. One of the bullet-riddled victims was still alive, their limp body jolting slightly. A 1-minute and 14-second video of the event has gone viral on social media, causing an uproar. People are asking where, when, and how this happened. However, no one can accurately provide the date or location, and some are sharing speculative information. Through investigation, Manabzamin has uncovered the true story behind the incident, revealing the full details.
On-site reports indicate that the tragic incident, where bodies were stacked on a police van, took place in a lane off Thana Road in the Bypile area of Ashulia, near the wall of the Officer Family Quarters of Islam Polymers and Plasticizers Limited, close to the police station. The bullet-riddled bodies of seven students were found scattered near the wall. The police later gathered the bodies and stacked them on a van. A more horrific event then unfolded, which is difficult to describe.
According to eyewitnesses from August 5th, tensions escalated after Sheikh Hasina resigned and left the country. A victory procession was held in the Bypile area, and by afternoon, an agitated crowd surrounded the Ashulia police station. Panicked, the officers on security duty near the station rushed inside and locked the gates. At around 4:30 PM, protesters surrounded the station, throwing bricks and trying to break the gate. The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Ashulia, AFM Sayed Ahmed, instructed his officers to prepare their weapons and load their guns. Hearing this, the crowd became even more agitated. OC Sayed Ahmed then tried to calm the crowd, telling them they had won and the police were surrendering. He begged for mercy, urging everyone to go home.
At one point, SI Malek, Detective Branch OC (Investigation) Arafat, SI Afzalul, and SI Jalil fired at the protesters, hitting several who fell in the alley next to the station. Amidst the chaos, many people ran for their lives.
Roni Ahmed, who witnessed the entire incident from a nearby building, told Manabzamin that around 10 to 12 people were shot and fell in front of the station's gate. After a few minutes of gunfire, some students managed to drag a few injured away, but 6 to 7 bodies were still lying there. The area was surrounded, and the police eventually came out armed, firing as they went.
The place where the bodies were stacked on the van was at the gate of Islam Polymers and Plasticizers Limited. Fahima Akhtar, owner of Sadiya Rajshahi Confectionery and Sweets, witnessed the police loading the bodies onto the van. She recounted that the bodies were first covered with a banner and taken in front of the station, where they were set on fire. She vividly recalls the horrific event.
Raki Ahmed, a garment worker present at the scene, said that the police initially loaded the seven bullet-riddled bodies into a pedal van and brought them to the front of the station, where they were set on fire in a pickup truck parked there. Aslam Hossain, another eyewitness, pointed out the exact spot where the video was filmed, showing the still intact poster visible in the footage. He recalled that the entire Thana Road was strewn with bodies that day.
The burned bodies included Asshabur, a tenth-grade student of Jhamgara Shahin School. His elder brother, Rezwanul Islam, said that the police had loaded his brother's body onto the van and set it on fire without giving the family a chance to know whether he was alive or dead.
Afzal Hossain, another witness, said that some officers were armed with two guns and others were in civilian clothes carrying unknown weapons. They fired indiscriminately, never stopping, shooting at random targets in the streets, alleys, and homes. A rickshaw driver at the Bypile bus stand confirmed that the police continued firing as they moved down the road, towards Nabinagar, with bullets hitting people on both sides of the street.
Several pedestrians told Manabzamin that the police continued firing as they walked towards Sohel Hospital, with the sounds of gunfire and people screaming for help filling the air.
According to relatives of the deceased and hospital sources, 31 people were killed by police, Chhatra League, and Jubo League bullets on August 5th from morning until midnight. Another 15 died in hospitals the next day, bringing the total death toll to 46. More than 1,500 people were injured and are receiving treatment in various hospitals.
A source told Manabzamin that around 90 to 100 armed police officers, led by OC AFM Sayed, OC Intelligence Mizanur Rahman Mizan, and OC Operations Nirmal Kumar Das, left the station and fired indiscriminately. Upon hearing the news, an army patrol team from Savar Cantonment rushed towards Bypile, where they were also shot at by the police, injuring two soldiers. Multiple army teams then surrounded the police, ordered them to surrender, and disarmed them.
That night, thousands of people gathered at the gate of Nabinagar Cantonment, and an army major addressed the crowd, trying to calm them down.

On October 26, 2021, the Bangladesh High Commission in Islamabad sent this message to the Director (External) in Dhaka.
The main subject of this message, signed by Counselor Md. Shahidul Islam, was that the Indian Embassy in Dhaka had installed a mobile tracking device by the country’s intelligence agency 'RAW' within the embassy premises. The purpose was to track the mobile phones of important individuals in Bangladesh. It was also advised to investigate the matter with the assistance of the BTRC.
But was any action taken after that? The authenticity of this letter has been verified. However, how can one country conduct such activities within the territory of an independent country? The responsible officials of the Indian Embassy should be summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to demand an explanation regarding this incident.

Islami Bank's former managing director Abdul Mannan today (30 August) claimed that he was forced to resign from his post at the bank on 5 January 2017.
S Alam Group had forced Mannan to resign from his post at the Shariah-based bank after he was taken hostage by members of a security agency, reports The Daily Star.
"I was forced to resign on a pad that the Islami Bank has never used since its inception in 1983 till date," Mannan told a webinar.

Commemorating the deaths in the recent student-led mass uprising that ousted the Awami League government on 5 August, he said, "Now I think I have freedom of expression. Earlier, I did not have the courage to speak even while staying abroad."
Mannan said the day he was taken hostage and forced to resign at gunpoint, many top officials of Bangladesh Bank (BB) had stayed in their offices until late at night to accept his resignation.
After taking control of the board by removal of Mannan and other top executives, the Chattogram-based conglomerate, owned by Mohammad Saiful Alam, and its associated companies took loans of Tk74,900 crore from the bank, which is nearly half of of Islami Bank's total outstanding loans as of March this year, according to the documents of the bank.
Having returned to the country after seven and a half years, Mannan said, "While abroad, some journalists from Bangladesh tried to contact me, but I didn't speak because I didn't feel safe. I lived in constant fear. I never thought I'd be able to breathe freely again in Bangladesh."

Captain Subayel recounted that he had told his wife to leave him, but she refused. He was then subjected to unspeakable torture, and threats were made to abduct his wife. He spent five years in jail following these events.
Dr. Khan Subayel further added, "General Moinul told me, 'How can you do this? No political figures' names can be mentioned here. The report must be based solely on the police's findings. The reports from the army or RAB cannot be accepted.'"
He continued, "On October 19, I was summoned again, but I didn't change the report. I simply stated that I could not betray the blood of my brothers. A few days later, I was taken away. During my detention at the DGFI, I saw Reza Sir, who I had never met before. It was the 'Hall of Mirrors.'"
Dr. Khan Subayel described the incident as a "planned massacre," intended to shackle Bangladesh, its nationalism, and patriotism under Indian imperialism. He claimed that military, civilian, and political figures were involved both directly and indirectly in this massacre.
He also stated, "When I took on the role of coordinating officer for the BDR mutiny investigation, an investigation team led by Lt. General Jahangir Sir, who is currently an advisor to the interim government, was already working on it. There was also a RAB investigation committee, a police investigation committee led by Abdul Kahar Akond, and an internal BDR investigation committee led by then-Lt. Colonel Aziz, who later became the army chief. The BDR DG at the time was Major General Moinul Islam, who later retired as a Lt. General. All the evidence would come to me, and I noticed attempts to obstruct the investigation."
He claimed, "The investigation revealed that the plan for the BDR massacre was made in December 2008. Over the next three months, more than 50 BDR soldiers met with various political and civilian figures. Intelligence officials deliberately concealed these meetings. Barrister Fazle Noor Taposh and Jahangir Kabir Nanak were involved, meeting multiple times with the BDR soldiers."
Dr. Khan Subayel added, "Between May and September 2009, three people inside the BDR committed suicide. These three were key witnesses. They committed suicide for no apparent reason, and to this day, it has not been investigated whether they actually committed suicide or not."
He concluded, "The forced disappearances, killings, and the creation of the 'Hall of Mirrors' began because of the failure to properly investigate and prosecute this massacre. I want to clearly state that General Aziz, Major General Moinul Hossain, former DGFI DG Fazlur Akbar, former RAB officer General Zia (who has now been arrested), and Lt. General Mujib (who is still in the army) all have blood on their hands. They are responsible for disappearances, murders, and corruption. The mastermind behind all of this was Major General Tarek Siddiqui, who controlled everything. Inferior quality Indian products have been introduced into the army, and the mortar purchased from India caused the deaths of one officer and two soldiers during a firing exercise."
