Putting the final touches on my upcoming presentation about #KaiOS at #IndiaFOSS2025 this weekend 🎨
I'll also bring the Nokia 8110 #bananaphone running the #Convo app for you to try out afterwards! :xmpp:
Will you be there?

Greetings, comrades.
A #BananaPhone is untrackable 🍌📞 -
I made sure to toot some countdown dates leading up to Star Trek's canonical date of the infamous Bell Riots. I didn't feel the need to toot on the day because the internet was full of commemorations.
In that same spirit, I just thought I'd mention that this Sept 27th is the 30th anniversary of the release of Raffi's Bananaphone.
Do with that what you will, internet. I know you're a talented bunch. 🍌📞💛

I got a Nokia 8110 4G ("banana phone") 🎉
My plan is to run #postmarketOS on it.

Yeah but this time, #kaios is targeting a different market: smart feature phones. These phones are not #dumpphone nor #smartphone. Not everyone wants one of these but for some like me it is actually the best choice(with respect to #ios and #android). Also KaiOS is partially #opensource like the #linux #kernel and the #gecko used.
You can see the source code of #b2g used in #kaios3 here:
https://github.com/kaiostech/gecko-b2g
A friend, @affe_null told me long time ago he was successful to compile it and run it on a custom Linux for the #bananaphone
Not sure if it was #postmarketos or his #debian port for that phone. However it was much less than useful because of the lack of hardware features, stock apps(telephony, messaging, etc) and a system app to manage these apps which are all closed source.

Phones have not looked like this since the 90s. I have never owned a phone like this. The banana phone bit will outlast the curved plastic phone. Similacra in action
