Si tu lis ceci et que tu es prof' ou étudiant·e en architecture, viens me voir et vous nous ferez un tuto aux petits oignons (je fournis les oignons).

  6. The Remarkable Versatility of Bamboos: A Sustainable Solution for Engineering and Architecture

Bamboo, belonging to the subfamily Bambusoideae of the grass family Poaceae, represents one of nature's most extraordinary renewable resources. With over 1,400 species distributed across diverse climatic zones, bamboo flourishes predominantly in tropical and subtropical.

  12. Bamboo's susceptibility to bugs and fungi is one of the major reasons why it is not more widely used, and has lead to the perception of it being 'the poor man's timber' in the past.

As a natural composite building material, its incredible strength has to be protected from being compromised, and vertical soak diffusion (VSD) is an efficient and economical solution (ha!) for that.

Due to its simplicity, treatments stations can be set up locally wherever required and improve longevity of the material.

Just fill up the poles with salty water like a big straw with one end closed, let them sit for a while, done. The salt flushes out the starches that the bugs and fungi are after, leaving the treated pole unappetizing. Brilliant!

Hopefully this method will become more widely used, and help spread the use of bamboo as a building material. Due to its incredible growth rates, carbon absorption-, water holding-, erosion preventing qualities, it is indeed the sustainable timber of the future!
