Capturó a un espía alemán al que retuvo mordiéndole el pantalón hasta que llegaron refuerzos.
Desfiló tras la guerra y hoy se conserva en el Smithsonian Institution.

A bordo del HMS Grasshopper ya había demostrado su utilidad alertando de amenazas aéreas.
Tras el hundimiento en 1942 nadó hasta una isla y encontró agua dulce cavando en la arena, evitando la deshidratación de decenas de hombres.
En los campos japoneses de Sumatra sufrió desnutrición extrema, parásitos y enfermedades tropicales.
Aun así advertía de serpientes en la jungla y reaccionaba ante guardias violentos.
Fue registrada como POW #81A y en 1946 recibió la Dickin Medal.
Su collar se conserva en el Imperial War Museum.

🐾Chips (mestizo: pastor alemán, husky y collie)

Integrado en el programa K-9 del ejército estadounidense.
En Sicilia, 1943, rompió la línea y atacó una posición de ametralladora que bloqueaba el avance aliado.
Salió herido en el cuero cabelludo pero logró que cuatro soldados italianos se rindieran.
Fue ejemplo temprano del uso táctico de perros entrenados para asalto y detección.

🐾Smoky (yorkshire terrier)

Pesaba menos de 2 kilos.
En Nueva Guinea fue introducida en una tubería de unos 20 metros bajo una pista bombardeada para pasar un cable de comunicaciones.
Sin ese trabajo, la pista habría permanecido inoperativa y los ingenieros habrían estado expuestos al fuego enemigo.
Después acompañó a soldados hospitalizados, convirtiéndose en una de las primeras perras de terapia documentadas en combate.

🐾Gander (terranova)

En Hong Kong, 1941, tomó una granada que había caído entre soldados canadienses heridos y corrió alejándose.
Murió en la explosión.
Su acción evitó múltiples bajas inmediatas.

Mascota del dragaminas Thorodd.
En puertos británicos defendía a marineros noruegos de agresiones y literalmente arrastraba a compañeros ebrios de vuelta al barco cuando sonaba la sirena de partida.
Era disciplina y protección en plena guerra.

🐾Togo y Balto (husky siberiano)

En 1925, durante la epidemia de difteria en Nome, Alaska, el relevo de trineos atravesó tormentas árticas y temperaturas extremas.
Togo recorrió el tramo más largo y peligroso sobre hielo inestable del estrecho de Norton.
Balto encabezó el último tramo hasta la ciudad.
Sin ese esfuerzo coordinado, la mortalidad infantil habría sido devastadora.

🐾Bretagne (golden retriever)

Trabajó en la Zona Cero tras el 11-S buscando supervivientes entre acero y polvo tóxico.
Después participó en otros desastres naturales.
Representa el papel moderno de los perros de búsqueda: técnica, resistencia y apoyo emocional a rescatistas.

Operó en terremotos nacionales e internacionales.

One of the coolest things my partner got me for Christmas this year was a new in box cut out display for the film Balto.
These were sent to movie distributors and shops like Blockbuster back in the 90s to promo the film.
I am keeping it boxed until I move and can actually display it

I've never taken part in any art challenge before, mostly due to a lack of free time, but I think this one I can do! The 10 Cubes Challenge by @blenderartists :blobfoxlaugh:

Here is my childhood heros #Balto from the 1995 animation film of the same name.
10 cuboids (11 with the base, sorry...), one texture (only did vertex painting).

I wanted a similar pose to this official artwork (2nd image) but with a different camera angle.

I wrote a short post on The Ice Cave rounding up some of the Balto reviews and retrospectives I've enjoyed, and I think are worth sharing. I'm sure you've seen Saberspark's review. I'm also including Cardinal West's excellent 2020 retrospective.

I also included The Nostalgia Critic's reviews of Balto and Balto II, but I like his work considerably less as a critic. (His style is not my thing, but hey, more Balto content.)
