  1. The spectacular Ballachulish Bridge across the narrows close to the mouth of Loch Leven in Lochaber. It replaced a ferry, or a 19-mile detour through Kinlochleven, when it opened in 1975. The ferry slipways can still be seen. More pics and info: undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/bal

  2. I was out in the hills of #ballachulish yesterday and it was absolutely beautiful. Very good for the soul to drench yourself in nature and only having your own company.

    "These are my hills!"

  3. The spectacular Ballachulish slate quarries, an unlikely but fascinating visitor attraction. Slate was extracted for over two and a half centuries until 1955; and from 1903 the quarries were served by a branch railway from Oban. More pics and info: undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/bal

  7. Every time I see these vibrant orange flowers, I can't help but think of where I first noticed them: #Kirkwall on #Orkney #Mainland - flic.kr/p/few4EJ

It's been too long since I was last in Kirkwall!

It might not look it, but this photo is actually *desaturated* from the RAW image!

  9. The ferries from 1926 & 1973 used the same concept of a turntable to make it easier to get vehicles on/off the ferry. Modern day turntable type ferries still exist. Just a few miles north of Ballachulish is the Corran Ferry.

  10. A fascinating look at how things used to be done.

Driving between Glasgow and Fort William either meant a long drive around Loch Leven, via Kinlochleven, or getting the Ballachulish Ferry.

This video shows the ferry crossing in 1926.
