  1. #AucklandNZ - The Maker's Swap

    Sunday, September 13 • 10 AM - 11 AM

    Highbury Community House
    110 Hinemoa Street
    Auckland, Auckland 0626

"Come hang out, trade your coolest homemade stuff, and meet fellow makers for a fun afternoon of swapping and chatting!

    The Maker’s Swap

    A cosy little gathering for #creatives, #HobbyMakers, #bakers, #artists, and #crafty people alike.

Each guest brings 5 #handmade items to swap. This could be anything from #BakedGoods and #candles to #crochet, #sewing, #preserves, #ceramics, #art, #SelfCare products, and more. In return, you’ll leave with 5 unique handmade treasures created by other #LocalMakers. There will be structured swap rounds to make sure everyone gets a fair chance to choose pieces they love.

Alongside the swap itself, there’ll be time to browse, chat, meet fellow creatives, and enjoy a slow, cosy atmosphere filled with thoughtful handmade things.

This isn’t about perfection or professional selling, it’s about creativity, connection, and celebrating the joy of making things by hand."

    Cost - NZ$5

  4. BTW - for #bakers, the cedar shims you can buy at your building centre are great for using as a "peel" to get your bread into and out of your oven, especially with a baking stone in place.

I've been using this one for well over a decade. I also use a very narrow one that's helpful for juggling loaf positions, or handling several buns at once.

    #sourdough.

  5. #bakers of Mastodon: why is my bread so frigging dense? I've made this "rustic loaf" four times now and I just can't get it to rise like in the photo on the recipe page. I've tried letting it rise on the parchment so that I don't disturb it as much when transferring to the oven tray. I've tried letting it proof for 4 hours instead of the suggested 1-3.
This isn't sourdough. I'm using instant yeast.

It tastes fine, but it's got the density of cheap breadmaker bread.

  6. Community Loaves, a #Seattle -area nonprofit, connects home #bakers with #food banks to provide fresh #bread and energy #cookies. Since 2020, they’ve donated over 200,000 loaves and 220,000 cookies to #FoodBanks in four states, with demand increasing due to rising #grocery prices and cuts in federal #FoodAid.

  7. Today is the day of Saint #Lawrence of #Rome (31 December 225 - 10 August 258). He is the #patron saint of those who work with open fires (#cooks, #bakers, #brewers, #textile cleaners, #tanners), of those to whom fire means harm (#librarians, #archivists, #miners, #poor people), and of #comedians.

  8. Good luck this week my fellow #bakers. Remember to hydrate, you've got this!

    Everyone else, please #BeKindtoYourFoodFolks

  9. Hey #bakers - this biscuit recipe calls for an oven setting of 425 degrees. Does that seem high? My biscuits are tasty but hardish and not flakey…wouldn’t 350 be better? 🤷‍♂️

  10. I live in the neighborhood of King Arthur Flour. Great products, great classes, employee-owned, and a commitment to diversity. It's a good time to show them your support!

  11. Hey #baking #bakers who #bake #bagels !

Do "real New York bagels" always have malt in?

Because I haven't been trying to make "New York-style bagels" - mine aren't that or Montréal but are closer to Montréal style* - but I was looking up something else and found a couple of people saying that.

anyway I was wondering because I might try it? but I want to know what I'm trying xD

    * No wood burning oven because lol this is my house, no honey in the boil water, otherwise about right

  12. I’ve said that I enjoy #cooking before. I also enjoy #baking sourdough #bread.

Everyone always loves my loaves. But, I feel like I can be much better.

So, help me #Bakers of #Mastodon. Send me your resources; books, articles, videos. Send me the bits & bobs that helped you on your journey to the perfect #sourdough loaf. 🍞

  13. Okay, here's a challenge for the bakers on here:

I want to make a flat, crispy bread, with whole, cooked, possibly sprouted grains (wheat, rye, barley, buckwheat). I want as little flour as possible in the dough, just enough to hold it together. I have a strong rye sourdough.
The purpose is to have a crisp bread that would work well for a diabetic. Hence the whole grains. Also oil free, of course.
    Any thoughts, #Fedicooks #cooks #bakers #bread #vegan #diabetes #EllieKPosts
