CNN reports talks between the #US and the Afghan #Taliban government began in March to retake #Bagram Air Base.

Washington views the base strategically vital to monitor the Tarim Basin in Xinjiang, which is where #China has deployed most of its military research and development, as well as its nuclear program.

Apparently forgetting what year it is, #Trump says:

"We're going to leave Afghanistan, but we're going to leave it with strength and dignity. And, we're going to keep Bagram, the big airbase that one of the biggest air bases in the world," Trump said.

The #UnitedStates military departed the #Bagram base in 2021, as it pulled out of #Afghanistan.

#Trump says he would have kept the #Bagram base rather than give it back to #Afghanistan, but the agreement that Trump sealed did not call for keeping Bagram. In fact, the Trump-#Taliban deal committed the #UnitedStates & its allies to “withdraw all their forces from remaining bases.”

#Defense Sec #PeteHegseth, said he was auditing the #Defense Dept’s #military leadership involved in the withdrawal. Trump then said he thought those leaders would “largely” be out.

#Bagram is an airbase in #Afghanistan, has little to do with the #energy industry and the US state of #Alaska is about 5,602 miles (9,015 km) from Afghanistan.

If he meant the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (#ANWR), he’s also wrong since it is estimated to have less than 12 billion barrels of oil while Saudi Arabia has proven reserves of 267 billion barrels.

He should be nowhere near any decisions made about #military or energy; he apparently doesn’t have the ability to know what they are.

From the first day I was in country, I always wanted to be on the last plane out of #bagram to watch them push the button and turn that place into a 5 meter deep pile of rubble as we left because it was for NOTHING. Instead the #usmarines and #usnavy and gods only know how many Afghanis died for NOTHING. It wasn't just #trump , it was #gwbush , #obama and the rest. DAMN them all.
