Just saw Tron: Ares in 3D with the d-box rumble seat. The 3D was worth it, and I hadn't experienced the d-box before. It vibrates and tilts at various parts of the movie. Most of the time it made sense and added to the experience. Then you'd get a jolt during some line of dialog I guess to drive the point home. Still something I'd recommend. I heard F1 was amazing with the d-box (but I can't stop thinking d-bag every time I type the name.)
For me, this Tron is similar to other movies of franchises I love, like the Ghost in the Shell reboot, where the visuals drive the movie. Here we can't say the filmmakers were trying to recreate iconic anime. They have characters doing dumb things so we can get a super cool shot, like the lead leaving her employees doing the actual work of protagonists while she runs down the street from a glowing Recognizer bot.
The writers didn't give the lead actress much opportunity to be awesome, except the weird decision to physically transport a very important digital thing on a flash drive via Ducati dual sport. Just when I was thinking there where was no way that dual sport would outrun the sweet self-balancing light bikes, she takes it up some stairs to do some urban moto-cross that was cool, and then uses it as a weapon to take out a baddie.
There are some strange tone shifts in the movie. In one instance we're in yet another chase sequence with Ares in the driver's seat. He's been saying some stalkerish stuff to the lead, and just as he could have reassured her that he was drawn by her empathy, or humanity (which were emphasized in the AI-hacking visuals), Ares starts talking about Depeche Mode and the soundtrack switches from kickass Nine Inch Nails to bouncy "I Just Can't Get Enough." I like that song but it wasn't aligned with the action or emotional tension in that scene.
Later Depeche Mode is used as a way to express the fledgling AI's humanity, since Ares just can't express how much he loves DM. (If you're going to use 80s synth pop as a mechanism for subversive emotion, you really have to go with Erasure.)
There's a sequence in the 80s version of the Tron server that kind of demonstrates how flashy visuals don't add much to video games. Jeff Bridges brings back the cool hippy hacker trope that I like a lot (experienced recently with Ozzy in Hamilton's Commonwealth Saga) even though it highlights how he doesn't ask much about consequences, or what Ares the god of war might do with his ability to persist in our world.
Which gets me to something that's bugging me about the plot device as well. Everyone is trying to find the Persistence Code that will allow Programs to persist in our world after being magically laser 3D printed (which was cool!) but this is a hardware problem, not a software problem.
How can the programs control how long their disposable vape pens last? Again, it was a neat visual, and drove the evil CEO trope, (especially when he got to put on gray-smoked sunglasses every time the lasers fired up) but didn't make a lot of sense.
Still, this movie looked and sounded great, and for every dumb thing it did, it still looked cool while doing it. It was worth $20 to me, which may not be the price in your area, so choose accordingly.

I watched this #badmovie last week and just…wow.
“Gramps” is the writer/director who goes back to college to prove to the science department that they are all wrong and god is real. Featuring my favorite anti science line of all time “If Natural Selection is real, how much does it weigh?”
It’s awful and unbelievably stupid but I had the absolute best time watching it. A girl dies from alcohol poisoning and is brought back through prayer.
