⚠️ Here's info that paints the urgency around the internet bills.
There is a minimum of 36 hours between passing from subcommittee to when it can be voted on in committee. It sounds like they are trying to slam it through.
Call your reps!

I say this about every Privacy Guides video, because it is repeatedly true, but this video is our best one yet 🤩 https://youtu.be/q0hE4EM7RRo
And this is an absolutely critical watch if you're in the U.S.A., or at least contact your reps via https://www.badinternetbills.com/ if you don't watch. The bills being proposed (largely by Democrats, they are not fighting for you!) will have a devastating global impact on free speech and privacy online.

Last week in the United States of America, Congress began fast-tracking nearly 20 bills in a massive effort to enact massive censorship on the internet, decimate your ability to use computers privately, and severely restrict free speech online.
We sat down with @taylorlorenz to dissect these 'Bad Internet Bills' and what you need to know to stop them: https://www.privacyguides.org/videos/2025/12/16/taylor-lorenz-on-kosa-the-screen-act-and-repealing-section-230/

And speaking of "Stop CSAM", it won't actually stop CSAM. Here's how EFF describes it
"But if the STOP CSAM Act passes, it would make it a crime to offer encryption, because it could "facilitate" the sharing of illegal child abuse material (CSAM)—even if there's no evidence that a platform or service intended to do so."
Here's EFF's action page: https://act.eff.org/action/tell-congress-don-t-outlaw-encrypted-applications

@KelsonV , whose Lemmy post put the Bad Internet Bills on a lot of people's radar.
@bad_internet_bills and @BadInternetBills, for news and actions.
Can the Fediverse Help Stop Bad Internet Bills? has more on why #KOSA, #EARNIT, #STOPCSAM, and the other bad internet bills are so bad -- including the threats to encryption and the harms they'll cause to LGBTQIA2S+ people -- and how #fediverse activism can help make a difference.
Here's four easy ways to help:
Upvote and boost posts in @bad_internet_bills -- and cross-post them to other communities and magazines where they're on-topic
On Mastodon, boost posts on the #BadInternetBills and #KOSA hashtags
Get the word out on other social networks too

CW: Bad Internet Bills week of action (US-focused, activism)
@eff says it's a "red alert". July 28 is the last day Congress is in session before their summer recess, which means supporters of #BadInternetBills are trying to sneak them through before then. So digital rights, human rights, and LGBTQIA2S+ groups are fighting back with a Week of Action.
Please help get the word out!
One easy thing to do: check out the #BadInternetBills hashtag and boost posts you see there.
Can the Fediverse Help Stop Bad Internet Bills? has more on why #KOSA, #EARNIT, #STOPCSAM, and the other bad internet bills are so bad -- including the threats to encryption and the harms they'll cause to LGBTQIA2S+ people -- and ways you can help.
And if you're a US resident, @fight has a handy page that makes it easy to contact Congress about the bills at https://badinternetbills.com
Or, if you prefer, EFF's page also has inks to pages that make it easy to contact Congress.
See the replies for more information about the individual bills -- and I'll update this thread over the course of the week as new information becomes available.

CW: re: Bad Internet Bills -- a pair of polls
There are quite a few bad internet bills in the US Congress -- see the parent poll for an overview (https://infosec.exchange/@thenexusofprivacy/110710615592853977
We''re considering doing a #fediverse activism campaign to support the efforts of @team, @eff, and the other organizations trying to sop these bad bills
But is there interest?
This poll's a attempt to find out.
And if you're potentially interested, please boost this or the parent poll!

CW: Bad Internet Bills -- a pair of polls
UPDATE: The post at https://infosec.exchange/@thenexusofprivacy/110748089398932169 has information about more ways you can help stop these bad internet bills.
There are quite a few bad internet bills in the US Congress -- @team has a handy page up at https://badinternetbills.com
The first poll: which of these bills had you heard of before this post?
#EARNIT threatens to undermine online encryption -- and targets sex workers
#KOSA is framed as protecting kids, but it's actually an internet censorship bill -- and would especially put LGBTQIA2S+ kids at risk.
The #RESTRICT Act is supposedly just about TikTok but actually gives Biden (and all future presidents!) extraordinary new powers to ban Americans from using entire apps simply by claiming they pose a “threat to national security."
#StopCSAM, despite its name, wouldn’t actually stop CSAM. Instead, it would make CSAM cases harder to prosecute—like SESTA/FOSTA before it—while reducing privacy protections in ways that would harm vulnerable people. Also, like EARN IT, it would undermine encryption.
