That’s up from $162 billion in 2022. Goldman Sachs’ chief economist has said AI contributed nothing measurable to U.S. GDP growth in 2025.
I am inclined to think that the billionaires pumping their (and our) money into the delusional fantasy of some hypothetical LLM paradise are just vibe-investing and vibe-businessing; but it’s just barely possible that they are aware that all this nonsense is going to bust like a pinata–the numbers are hard to ignore.
But if that’s the case, what is their plan? Is this just a wholly legal (if morally bankrupt) Ponzi scheme, where some sucker gets left holding the bag? Is the plan to feather their nests and then trigger a massive financial collapse, so they can buy up distressed assets at low, low prices? A short-term grift that got out of hand, where the principle perpetrators can’t find a smooth exit ramp? Or is this all in fact a result of good ol’ peer-pressurized, madness of crowds, Tulip mania? Or do they really, really believe in the snake oil they’re selling? That would be the saddest scenario of them all.

Several months after a hacking group claimed to be selling nearly 3 billion records stolen from a prominent data broker, much of the information appears to have been leaked on a forum. According to Bleeping Computer, the data dump includes 2.7 billion records of personal info for people in the US, such as names, Social Security Numbers, potential aliases and all physical addresses they are known to have lived at.
