Three Good Things
🌹 A romantic date last night. He brought long-stem red roses!
🌹 Summer semester grades have been officially posted. Term GPA: 4.0!
🌹 After exploring our small neighborhood, Wee Bunz has returned to my backyard as his or her familiar thumping ground. Like his or her older sibling, Cottontail, Wee Bunz has taken an interest in my comings and goings, but as always, I stay a safe distance for both of us.
Just a reminder: I do not feed, attempt to handle, or even approach any of the three generations of wild bunnies who have made my yard and my nextdoor neighbor's woodpile their home. They are free to safely live their wild lives here. All I do is document.

There are many stories about how naive young rabbits are. This little one thought nothing of coming alongside to see if the yellow coneflowers (Ratibida pinnata) are tasty. Don't worry, the bunny got to snack. 🐇🙂 #NativePlants #gardening #NorthernIllinois #BackyardWildlife #BackyardHabitat

I should not have been awake at 530am. But I was, so coffee was made, and it’s nice enough to sit outside and listen to the birds and admire the plants which are doing their best. In April we had two hard frosts which killed a lot of the new growth. I am pleased that so much seems to have recovered, particularly our Desert Willows. My approach to gardening is pretty chaotic, the Penstemons, for example, grow where the seeds fall and that makes me happy. #BackyardHabitat #MyWildGarden

Celebrating David Attenborough's 100 - the baby rabbits in the compost bin have opened their eyes. Estimating at about 13 days old. I think there are at least three but they are quite squirmy now. #Attenborough100 #BackyardHabitat #BackyardWildlife

There's a declining maple tree in the yard that was hosting #woodpeckers. Unfortunately, their diligent home building weakened this junction, and a storm toppled that whole section. I hope they are doing okay without their shelter. The marks are fascinating! #BackyardHabitat
(An arborist did visit previously and said it was fine to leave up. Nothing overhangs the house, sidewalk, or neighbors' driveways.)

An experience of biodiversity connectiveness- A society of house sparrows lived near by, centering on a nest hole in a neighbor's garage. That garage got repaired and now the sparrows are gone. It's noticeably more quiet. Even the other birds aren't around as much, which was a surprise to me.
I'm also seeing more caterpillars. Like this fluff ball (ID says tiger moth) on a nightshade weed I was removing. I guess I'll leave the spot as is for a bit longer. #insects #BackyardHabitat #pollinators

Yesterday in #YardTherapy I planted penstemon, echinacea and yarrow. Saved a super saturated sad lavender. Last night the deer came into my yard... And ate the clover I left while ignoring my new plants. This is why I love my #BackyardHabitat #NWNatives #gardening.
