Flicker Update: First sighting of a youngster at the opening!

I'm still amazed that the parents chose this spot right by the street and by the mailbox.

I'm not sure what Mr. Oriole is doing, but he appears to be a jolly fellow.

Baby bird sounds. The racket emanating from the Northern Flickers’ nesting cavity was audible from a distance of 20 feet / 6m or more. (18 seconds of audio: the staccato, buzzy, grunting sounds are coming from the cavity.)

And the cinnamon vines on the stump are growing like crazy in the tropical heat and humidity of the last few days.

Northern Flicker. It's been about 5 weeks since the pair of flickers started excavating their nesting cavity. And 3 weeks since I covered the caved-in hole in the roof with the plate and brick.

If things are progressing well, there are some hatchlings now, and they will soon be crowding the opening at feeding time.

Note: The stump is getting a messy green covering on the side and top: Cinnamon Vine!

Happy #Wrensday! This is one of the "Wrens of Sycamore Manor" (toting something in its beak -- cottonwood fuzz?).

  13. Breaking news:

Local hummingbird has successfully trained human male to operate outdoor shower every morning.

Witnesses report the bird emerges from the rhododendron on schedule, performs several aerial inspections, enjoys a refreshing mist bath, and then departs looking extremely satisfied with management.

The human appears unaware that he is now employed by the hummingbird.

Eastern Phoebe. I got a new (well, used) zoom lens for my camera, and this is the first nice photo.

Happy #Wrensday! This one (eventually) hopped into a little patch of sunshine.

Bonus: While I was photographing the wren, a turkey vulture drifted into home airspace. It was quickly escorted away by an F-16 Blackbird.

  19. Our friend the great blue heron is back.
It appears we have been adopted.
The buffet of large slugs in the fields seems to be the attraction. Gophers and mice are on the menu too.
To call Summer territorial is an understatement but she is giving the heron grace because we asked her to.

  23. Early morning unannounced great blue heron visitor right off of our deck. I asked Summer to whisper so I could get some pictures.
    We love where we live.

The advantage of keeping a close watch for the return of the Mystery Bird is seeing lots of other visitors -- such as this female Baltimore Oriole.

By the way, the Mystery Bird did make a brief appearance. Current best guess is Bell's Vireo.

    Mystery Bird.

So... yesterday, I was looking out the window and saw a tiny bird bouncing around in the lower branches of the pine tree. I had no idea what it was, but I was able to take a couple of OK photos.

Could it be a female Ruby-crowned Kinglet?

I've had a couple of male hummingbirds around for 3 weeks, but today was the first time that I for sure saw a female. And, while the female was on the feeder, another hummingbird was doing zoomies above the tree -- back and forth and up and down. Apparently, romance is in the air.

Northern Flicker Update. A few days ago, I noticed that a chunk of the “roof” of the nesting cavity had collapsed, leaving a 2 by 3 inch hole (5 by 7.5 cm). That stump, especially the top, is very punky.

With rain coming, I decided to help a little bit by covering the hole in the roof. Now, after 2 nights of heavy rain, it seems the birds’ are still happy in their nest.

Indigo Bunting! It's been probably 25 years since I've seen an Indigo Bunting in the yard. I was glad to get this quick photo through the window.
