The Ides of March 2026 blizzard was a Goldilocks blizzard for us in the Twin Cities region: about a foot of snow, more or less. A good workout to clear, and enough to provide a nice base for skiing over formerly bare ground.
Over in the UP of Michigan they got up to 52"/132cm of snow! Yikes!
Yesterday we swung over to Willow River State Park in Wisconsin to enjoy it on our Hok (backcountry) skis. The SW trails in the park had been groomed (not the best for the Hoks) but the rest was untouched except by some hearty hikers.
We did the 6 mile loop around Little Falls Lake. Skiing was better than all of our recent Gunflint vacation except for that first day on the freshly groomed Banadad!

The deep snow has gotten a little firmer, but now has a thin icy crust, so not fun for huskies to break trail on. We took turns laying trail for them to follow. With a bit of trial and error, we managed a lead arrangement that allowed Zeena and Tonttu their own space on the trail without crowding each other out.
While listed as a "road" (even with a stop sign at the bottom!), it's difficult to see more than ORVs making their way up this path in the summer....

That day felt unusual — I was moving between two heavy layers of clouds.
The soft, filtered light gave the place a mysterious mood, transforming those modest mountains into something from a child’s fantasy tale.#NatureOnMastodon

A little skitour up the Roßkopf in Niederau near the #WilderKaiser with a friend of mine in perfect weather. Lovely views from about 1800m.
This was only my second skitour this year, so despite my extensive #TrailRunning, I felt it in my thighs. But no gain without pain 😁

Discovering https://www.godawnpatrol.com/app made me excited for touring this winter in the Lake Tahoe basin.
Dawn Patrol is a backcountry skiing app designed to help you plan safer and smarter tours. It provides detailed route descriptions, advanced terrain analysis, and tools to assess avalanche risks, enabling skiers and snowboarders to make more informed decisions in avalanche terrain.
It pairs well with https://caltopo.com/'s live satellite overlays.

Reached Jänsmässholmen, 325km on my route and a thousand more to go. Having a day off. They have food! And sauna!

Made it to Helags (about 110km on my route). Will take some days off to wait out a storm. Also, my body just needs it. Every now and then I got a glimpse of the sun, despite all this hard work, I feel really blessed.

Hey, ski tourers, backcountry skiers or ski mountaineers do you prep your skis (hot waxing, edge sharpening) yourselves or leave it to a ski service?

There’s still plenty of snow on Shasta but the warm temps are taking a toll. I was fortunate to just spend five days in a row guiding on the mountain and am looking forward to returning. #MtShasta #california #cascades #skiing #backcountry #backcountryskiing #splitboard #volcano #volcanoskiing #lemurians

A few more shots from guiding around Hokkaido this January. The snow was wonderful but we did see the sun more than is normal. #japan #hokkaido #snow #snowboarding #splitboarding #backcountry #kokusai #skiing #backcountryskiing
