The Ides of March 2026 blizzard was a Goldilocks blizzard for us in the Twin Cities region: about a foot of snow, more or less. A good workout to clear, and enough to provide a nice base for skiing over formerly bare ground.
Over in the UP of Michigan they got up to 52"/132cm of snow! Yikes!
Yesterday we swung over to Willow River State Park in Wisconsin to enjoy it on our Hok (backcountry) skis. The SW trails in the park had been groomed (not the best for the Hoks) but the rest was untouched except by some hearty hikers.
We did the 6 mile loop around Little Falls Lake. Skiing was better than all of our recent Gunflint vacation except for that first day on the freshly groomed Banadad!

Today, my wife and I went on a short ski tour to the summit of Glungezer at around 2,700m and to nearby Sonnspitz at around 2,600m
The weather was absolutely perfect, with hardly any wind (which is rare for these peaks), and the snow was perfect too.
Let's just say: I'm not ready for spring yet ... and it just can't always be #trailrunning 😁

The deep snow has gotten a little firmer, but now has a thin icy crust, so not fun for huskies to break trail on. We took turns laying trail for them to follow. With a bit of trial and error, we managed a lead arrangement that allowed Zeena and Tonttu their own space on the trail without crowding each other out.
While listed as a "road" (even with a stop sign at the bottom!), it's difficult to see more than ORVs making their way up this path in the summer....

I see more and more people venturing into the world of #backcountrySkiing the last couple years; people who are good skiers, but don’t have/carry #avalanche gear. Inevitably, they say “oh, we’re just looking at low-angle stuff with no avy danger”. But it’s not that simple. I hate to gatekeep a sport that already has enough barriers to entry, but backcountry winter travel without a beacon/shovel/probe (and training to use it) is a line you should never cross.

Did my first backcountry skiing today. Thanks to plenty of recent snowfall, I started almost literally in my backyard.
Being good at going down will take a loooong time, I barely managed the local trails and logging roads.

No #TrailRunning today, instead I took the morning off to go on a short #skitour with my eldest son over the #Schartenkogel to the summit of the #Glungezer at 2677m. An easy ski tour with fantastic views, only about 10 minutes away from where I live.
The weather gods were friendly the last few days, we got some snow in the mountains. Enough to ski down in fresh #powder ... doesn't get much better!

And some more photos for @deafferret who was asking earlier about our hiking/skijoring harness setup.
Dale's hip pack was made originally for fly fishing, but has lots of nice pockets for things you might need while out skiing on a day trip in the wilderness, and a nice wide padded back to distribute the pull of huskies. We can move the split bungee attachment to the waist belt on a full backpack for longer treks, as long as there are loops on the sides to attach to.
Here, Dale is also showing off his "Tiak" which is basically "Stick" in the Altai Mountains where they were inspired from. It's an alternative to ski poles, with the added benefit of braking on steep downhills. First trip, worked well!

Skijoring Day #1! We wanted to break in our legs on something a little on the easier side, so we took the Hok backcountry skis down the Moose Trail, which follows the northern edge of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.
Several inches of fresh snow awaited us: a good depth for skiing without exhausting the huskies breaking trail for us. Hok skis floated nicely, though as always, their short length work the hips and legs to keep them going in a straight line much of the time, especially when the base isn't flat.
The busy snowmobile trail the first 1/2 mile from the trailhead is particularly annoying to ski on, and we were glad to break away to fresh powder.

A little skitour up the Roßkopf in Niederau near the #WilderKaiser with a friend of mine in perfect weather. Lovely views from about 1800m.
This was only my second skitour this year, so despite my extensive #TrailRunning, I felt it in my thighs. But no gain without pain 😁

For those who wonder about our reference to "Hok" skis, they're a model of backcountry ski made by Altai Skis with a permanent skin on the bottom for traction. They're also wider than Nordic skis, which give them more float in ungroomed conditions, which is what we often face.
We have the shorter 125cm models, which may be slower (actually handy on downhills with dogs) but very maneuverable and handle twisty snowshoe trails well. We use the same NNN BC bindings we have on our Nordic skis, so we can use the same boots with either.
With the skins, going uphill on these skis is a BREEZE compared to Nordic skis!
Hoks have been called the "gravel bikes of skis" and the moniker fits them well.

Made it to Helags (about 110km on my route). Will take some days off to wait out a storm. Also, my body just needs it. Every now and then I got a glimpse of the sun, despite all this hard work, I feel really blessed.
