I was sad we didn’t have live translation for our #interoperability workshop, although the live transcription & rapid video publication hopefully helped non-English speakers with access to translation/interpretation tools. Meta’s smart glasses demo of the latter was amazing 😳 #BabelFish #IGF2025

Apple (AAPL) is designing a new AirPods feature that would allow users to listen and respond to live translations of in-person conversations, according to a Bloomberg report that cites unnamed sources. The feature will reportedly work in tandem with an iPhone, which will translate speech for the user and relay it to a pair of AirPods. When the user responds, the iPhone will play a translation out loud, enabling a two-way conversation.

Never have I read a claim more absurd that the advert for these earphones from Aliexpress...that make a bold claim to use A.I as essentially international translators....and all for less than 10 Euros.

The newest missconception about #ai A german politican just said "Learning a second language is not needed anymore, as my phone translates it" While I love the idea of a #babelfish learning a language is so much more then learning to listen, speak, read and write in one.
Learnig a language will train you to think differently. Recognize similiarites and differences. Deepends the understanding of a culture. I still wish I would speak more then two languages fluently.

Der #Babelfish soll schon bald Realität sein. OK, nicht ganz so elegant biologisch wie das literarische Original - wir werden neben Smartphones oder Smartwatches auch Headsets benötigen, die es aber schon längst kaum sichtbar als InEars gibt. Den Rest besorgt KI. Wir können dann alle losreden, wie uns der Schnabel gewachsen ist, und hören simultan übersetzt, was unser anderssprachliches Gegenüber gerade sagt - egal ob zu uns, oder ob wir einfach nur in unserer Nähe Gesagtes aufschnappen. Auch Emotionen sollen dabei mit transportiert werden. Das könnte Fragen aufwerfen:
- Werden wir noch Fremdsprachen lernen (wollen)?
- Wie gehen wir damit um, wenn wir kulturell nicht verstehen, was die Übersetzung sagt?
- Wird es mehr Völkerverständigung geben und weniger Fremdenhass? Oder gar das Gegenteil?

I just followed a user who mostly posts in Finnish. The "Translate" feature in the Mastodon web client seems to work rather well for Finnish language to English. However I wish I could have it auto-translate all posts by her - I'm guessing that would end up burning too much API bandwidth to the translation engine in use (DeepL.com).

Rereading Vernor Vinge's "A Fire Upon the Deep", I came across the sentence "Effective translation of natural languages comes awfully close to requiring a sentient translator program."

This aged badly -- but it's a reminder of how amazing Google Translate now is, by 1990s standards.
