Earth quake in Xoy kills 3, injures thousandThree people (but some say seven) died in a magnitude 5.9 earthquake in Xoy, a mixed Kurdish-Azeri city in northwest-Iran close to the Turkish border, on Saturday evening. Almost a thousand people needed hospital treatment for their injuries, according to reports. Besides aid, the authorities reportedly sent anti-riot units.

Some seventy villages in the surroundings needed emergency aid. People went out into the street afraid to stay inside, suffering from snow and freezing conditions outside, as the picture (via Heshmat Alavi) shows.
The earthquake was also felt across the border in Van province in Bakur (Kurdistan in Turkey), but no damage was reported there.
