The “diplomatic” context of this story is also quite interesting - and the reason for quotes is that I hesitate to use this term against #Putin behaviour:
- First #Russia denied everything and Russian pumped all kinds of nonsense similar to what we’ve seen in the #MH17 case
- After a few days Putin reluctantly mumbled something about being “sorry for an accident that happened in our air space” but otherwise Russia consistently denied responsibility and ignored any #Azerbeijan request for investigation or compensation
- Azerbeijan started stiffening its stance towards #Russia in general - at this point you could see Aliyev was simply puzzled why Putin was unable to do the simplest thing from the beginning - say it was an accident, offer support and apologize
- In response Russia did the dumbest, but the most Russian thing possible - it took… revenge on Azerbeijan for not bowing to Moscow’s ostensible arrogance. They started arresting Azerbeijani minority all across the country, several of them “died in custody”
- After almost a year Putin finally mumbled a kind of admission, although it was still reluctant and muddied by speculative nonsense.
As you can see, in Putin we’re dealing with a pathological liar and narcissist personality who can’t say a word of truth even on the simplest things.

#Azerbeijan media published a statement of the commander of the #Russia air defense battery that operated in #Grozny #Chechnya in December 2024 and a video of the battery firing at an aircraft that later came out to be the civilian Azerbaijan Airlines Flight 8243
In response to the questions posed to me, I, Captain Dmitry Sergeyevich Paladichuk, can explain the following: I am the commander of BM No. 274, chief of the crew, and was on combat duty covering the city of Grozny from 24 December 2024 to 25 December 2024. At 05:40 on 25 December 2024, an order was received to go to alert level 1. At 05:48, I reported going to alert level 1 via mobile phone. Mobile phone reception was unstable at my position, and I had no other reliable means of communication. Fibre optic cables had been laid but were not connected to the terminal, and there was no digital telephone with a dial pad. At 08:11, the target detection station detected a potential target, which I took under precise guidance of the Multifunctional Radar System, which I reported to the 51st Division’s command post. At 08:13, I reported the updated coordinates: α = 338 degrees, D = 7000 m, H = 490 m, V = 118 m/s, heading 230 degrees. I received an order by telephone to destroy the target. The target was not visible in the optics due to very thick fog, which was reported to the VKP. At 08:13:30, I gave the order to fire to the operator. At 08:13:33, the missile veered off course. At 08:13:47, the BM-72V6 command post reported that the target had been missed. At 08:13:48, I gave the order to fire again. According to the MRLS, the first missile was launched when the target had the following coordinates: α = 319 degrees, D = 7300 m, H = 697 m, V = 80 m/s. The second missile was launched when the target had the following characteristics: α = 311 degrees, D = 8000 m, H = 1300 m, V = 120 m/s.

#Azerbeijan 🇦🇿 president Aliyev declined invitation to 9 May parade in Moscow in relation to 🇷🇺 downing of passenger aircraft in December 2024

#Azerbeijan president Ilham Aliyev declined Putin’s invitation to 9 May parade in Moscow quoting #Russia hostile and arrogant behaviour in downing of the AZAL Flight 8243 in December 2024, recent GRU cyberattacks on Azerbeijan’s infrastructure and expulsion of member of parliament Azer Badamow from Moscow.

Alexey Milchakov from #Rusich raised a very similar list of ideas to avenge #Azerbeijan complaining that #Russia (!) downed its passenger (!) aircraft.
- “simply take away their businesses [in Russia], as we did with Domodedovo”
- “those who has Russian passport, send to the front line; if they refuse, strip of citizenship and deport”
- “those without citizenship, check thoroughly and deport”
Please note: both Vershinin and Milchakov are furious exclusively because #Russia shot down a passenger aircraft flying from Azerbeijan to Russia, including Russian citizens on board, and Azerbeijan complains about it. Milchakov honestly feels that Azerbeijan somehow “offended” Russia and it requires some kind of punishment or revenge.
You just can’t make it up. I find these two statements excellent clinical examples of how the Russian system of values works, because it’s not something an average Western person can even realistically imagine.

After #Azerbeijan announced it will seek justice and compensation from #Russia for shooting down the #J2843 flight, a prominent Russian writer Lev Vershinin called Azerbeijan president “whining f..got” because he dares to raise some complaints towards the powerful sacred Russia. Interestingly, Vershinin doesn’t even live in Russia, he lives in #Spain.
-
Another great cultural achievement of #Putin - voluntary abandoning of Russian language outside of Russia. In #Ukraine, #Belarus, #Georgia, #Armenia, #Latvia, #Lithuania, #Azerbeijan and #Kazakhstan the use of Russian as a lingua franca has been declining dramatically.

#Azerbeijan President Ilham Aliyev’s full commentary yesterday on the downed Russian flight J2-8243.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ut0KkyZhyPQ (in Russian)
Important because even if seemingly everything is already known, the country’s president saying outright that ‘the blame for the crash lies entirely with representatives of the Russian Federation’ has its weight.
Perhaps more important is what Aliyev says immediately afterwards: that the MAK, with which Azerbaijan had previously routinely cooperated, was not allowed into the investigation precisely because of the notorious lies of the highest Russian authorities from the very beginning.
As Aliyev diplomatically puts it, ‘we had serious doubts about the objectivity’ of the Russian authorities.
This is an accusation not against the MAK but, above all, against the Kremlin, which in this case bluntly followed the only moral principle it knew: to deny everything and to obstruct the investigation by all means.
Aliyev says straightforwardly that all they saw from the Kremlin’s side from the very beginning was ‘attempts to cover up the case, to blame it on some birds or oxygen bottles’ (such versions did indeed appear in the Russian media). Such an accusation by the president of the state is no trifling matter, as it shows unequivocally how the Russian system is treated - as a rotten, corrupt structure, controlled top-down from the Kremlin with contempt for any principles.
Aliyev also mentions ‘humanity’ at the outset of his demands on Moscow, and this is not mere rhetoric because, especially in the Caucasus, adherence to certain principles is an extremely important part of the culture there, even if it is not fully understood in the West.
The Russians, meanwhile, behaved like cattle in this case - mocking the civilians they killed and brazenly lying, not to mention probably sending the damaged plane to the sea to fall down there. What is striking from the attitude of the Russians in this case is above all moral nihilism but also a sense of absolute impunity.
At this point, however, it cannot be overlooked that we ourselves taught Putin the latter with two decades of ‘non-escalation’ in the face of the worst Russian assassinations and crimes inside and outside the EU.

#Putin passed his apology to #Azerbeijan president Aliyev in relation to „an incident that happened in Russian airspace”. This is probably the most sincere admission of guilt #Russia managed to procure ever and it should be noted the statement does not mention Russian anti-air rocket, just vaguely mentions „ongoing drone attacks”. It also does not explain why Russians sent the damaged aircraft to cross the Caspian Sea where only crew skills and a miracle prevented it from crashing.

#Azerbeijan president Aliyev declared the country has "no territorial claims" against #Armenia whose president Pashninyan officially recognized Karabakh part of Azerbaijan. They also discussed peace agreement. This would effectively end a conflict that was bubbling since 1990's and allowed #Russia to keep a significant military presence in Armenia and Azerbaijan "peacekeepers". -
