Today would have been Aysenur Ezgi Eygi's 28th birthday.

Earlier this year, #Aysenur Ezgi Eygi translated a Turkish poem into English in a #UW class. After her murder by an IDF sniper earlier this month, two of her classmates have written a tribute to her, and their poetry translations, including Ayşenur’s, are now in Literary Hub. #israel #palestine #poetry #translation #seattle https://lithub.com/remembering-the-life-and-work-of-aysenur-ezgi-eygi-translator-and-activist/

My colleague Hamza Zafer, who wrote the first version of this statement about #Aysenur, has shared his original wording—which was watered down by a #UW process prior to release. Here’s his stronger version of the statement, shared with his permission and endorsed by many of us, including me. #aysenurezgieygi #palestine #israel #seattle

A statement from University of Washington faculty on the murder of our student Ayşenur Ezgi Eygi in #Palestine. Ayşenur was one of the lead organizers of #UW’s encampment protests against the #Gaza #genocide. She’d spent most of her life in #Seattle.
This comes from the Department of Middle Eastern Languages and Cultures, where she had just completed a minor. We are outraged and grieving. May this be the end of institutional silence. #aysenur #aysenurezgieygi #israel

American killed in West Bank was longtime activist ‘bearing witness to oppression’ #AysenurEzgi
The professor said the two met when he was giving a guest lecture in a course on feminist cinema of the Middle East and he spoke of his own experience protesting in the West Bank in 2013.
“I had no idea she would then be inspired to take on a similar experience,” he said, recounting how she reached out to him for advice as she prepared to join the International Solidarity Movement. “I tried to discourage her, but from a very weak position, since I’d already done it myself. She was very, very principled in her activism in this short life that she lived.”
In her final academic year, she devoted significant time “researching and speaking to Palestinians and talking about their historical trauma”, Fani said. “She was incredibly well-informed of what life was like in the West Bank. She was not a naive traveler. This experience was the culmination of all her years of activism.”

Yep, some of my photos from the event 👇🏿
Around 500-1000 ppl were in attendance with several close friends of Ayşenur speaking and many more watching on.
The location, Alki Beach, was a spot Ayşenur and her friends had tried to have a bon fire earlier in the summer but were stopped by park rangers (they made a new park curfew lately). They had planned to have a better beach party when Ayşenur returned, so this was a nod to those plans.

"Seven Days After Israeli Forces Kill American, Biden and Harris Haven’t Spoken to Victim’s Family"
“So, it’s a bit frustrating, because what kind of investigation are you doing if you aren’t even talking to the people who are right next to her when she was killed.”
-
“Like the olive tree she lay beneath where she took her last breaths, Ayşenur was strong, beautiful, and nourishing. Her presence in our lives was taken needlessly, unlawfully, and violently by the Israeli military.”

“She was a light in any room,” Kelsie Nabass, a friend of Eygi’s, said.
“She always had the biggest, brightest smile on her face. She was the friend in the room that would make jokes and little side comments and just make sure that the vibe was always fun. She was very warm and very, very inviting.”

Turkish Justice Minister Yilmaz Tunc said the country had evidence regarding the Israeli military’s killing of Aysenur Ezgi Eygi in the occupied West Bank last week and will be seeking international arrest warrants for those responsible.

Seattle #DSA Mourns #Aysenur Ezgi Eygi
Contact: [email protected]
"We were shocked and enraged to hear of the murder of recent University of Washington graduate Aysenur Ezgi Eygi at the hands of the Israeli Defense Forces [#IDF]. On September 6th, Aysenur was in the #WestBank standing alongside #Palestinians and other demonstrators peacefully protesting illegal Israeli settlements when Israeli forces fired two rounds of gunfire. Aysenur was shot in the head and died shortly after being transported to a hospital in Nablus. She joins the tens of thousands of Palestinians martyred by the Israeli military in the last year, now escalated even further with the brutal invasion of the West Bank. According to the International Solidarity Movement, who she was volunteering with at the time, she is the 18th protester killed in the Palestinian village of #Beita since 2020 defending against the illegal settlement expansions.
"This is a terrible, horrifying loss. Those of us who knew Aysenur ('Ezgi', for many who organized with her) knew her to be a genuine, passionate, and determined person –a voice for the oppressed and the working class internationally. And for her, words alone were not enough. Ezgi was the type of socialist who embodied the true spirit of solidarity. From #StandingRock to organizing against Trump’s hateful agenda to the #GeorgeFloyd uprising, wherever people were struggling for liberation, Ezgi was there at their side. She played an instrumental role in organizing the #ProPalestine student encampment at #UW last spring, even participating in negotiations with the administration regarding their ties to #Boeing and Israel.
"As we mourn Ezgi’s loss, we remember her words from a 2017 speech during a student walkout she helped lead right after #Trump’s inauguration:
"'Mass movements of ordinary people have succeeded in blocking #RightWing bigoted presidents before….we are fighting for #socialist change. As long as our future is decided by profit-driven #OilCorporations and #millionaire lobbyists, things will only get worse. For many of us, this movement isn’t just about stopping Trump, it’s about creating a world free from #racism, from #sexism, from income inequality, and 3environmental disruption…And ultimately, we call for a political revolution against the #BillionaireClass and a socialist alternative.'
"We offer our deepest condolences to all family, friends, and community who are affected by this loss. We grieve alongside the International Solidarity Movement, and support the call for an independent investigation into this unlawful killing of a U.S. citizen.
"As the Biden/Harris administration continues to enable a #genocide, we demand an immediate and permanent ceasefire and end to US military aid to #Israel. Only when the US government stops funding it will there be an end to the genocide, occupation, and #apartheid in Palestine. We can only hope to honor Ezgi’s example of resistance and continue to fight for a world free from #genocide, #imperialism, #capitalism, and for the liberation of Palestine and all oppressed people."

“We reiterate our demand for the US government leaders – President Biden, Vice President Harris, and Secretary of State Blinken – to order an independent investigation into the Israeli military’s deliberate targeting and killing of a US citizen.”From the statement of the family of Aysenur Ezgi Eygi
-
The family of Aysenur Ezgi Eygi has denounced the Israeli military’s preliminary inquiry into the 26-year-old activist’s killing as “wholly inadequate”.
“We are deeply offended by the suggestion that her killing by a trained sniper was in any way unintentional. The disregard shown for human life in the inquiry is appalling,” they said in a statement.

Biden says Israeli killing of US-Turkish activist appears an ‘accident’
“Apparently, it was an accident – it ricocheted off the ground and she got hit by accident,” Biden told reporters, hours after US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the killing of Aysenur Ezgi Eygi, 26, was “unprovoked and unjustified”.
-
The only thing "unintentional" about #Israel killing US citizen #Ayşenur Ezgi Eygi is that they didn't realize she was a US citizen. A sniper saw her, targeted her, intended to kill her, and did so, but she turned out to be not just another #Palestinian murdered in cold blood for no reason by #IDF. The only reason it is reported by the news is because she was American.
Israel kills civilians in #Palestine with total impunity, for no defensible reason.

At this morning's State Department press briefing reporters questioned the Biden administration's position on waiting for Israel to investigate the murder of American citizen Ayşenur Eygi. Reporter Prem Thakker points out that its been over 200days since the death of Hind with no developments coming from Israel's investigation yet the world's press has already determined her murder at the hands of the IDF was an intentional war crime.

"During the weekly demonstration in Beita, Palestine, on the morning of September 6th 2024, the Israeli army intentionally shot and killed International Solidarity Movement (ISM) human rights activist Ayşenur Eygi."
You can read journals by volunteers for ISM, documenting daily action to protect Palestinian civilians against white Jewish nationalist (Zionist) genocidal violence:

When I first heard about Ayşenur's death I was so upset I could not post about it. I stopped through the University of Washington Palestine protest camp earlier this year and saw comrades old and new.
It was a beautiful work of activism and civic engagement that brought me to tears just spending time with the students.
A liberal boomer demanded recently to know what news I watch to formulate my opinions on the situation in Palestine...

An Israeli activist described the moment Ayşenur was killed. He described how systematic the Israeli settlers have been in continuous land theft from West Bank villages. Though the murder of Ayşenur, a US citizen, is shocking he mentions that the IDF has killed dozens of Palestinians in the West Bank who dare protest land theft since 2021.

There is a complete statement from Ayşenur Eygi's family calling for a stronger response from Joe Biden's administration for the murder of a US citizen at the hands of IDF soldiers.
