    >> Right-wing activists surrounded and attacked a vehicle in which Arab-Israeli MK Ayman Odeh was sitting, as he arrived to give a speech at a protest in central Israel's city of Nes Tziona. The vehicle's front windshield was shattered.

    >> Rioters at the scene called out "death to Arabs" ...

    >> Prior to the incident, the organizers of the protest expressed their concern about imminent violence against the police, who promised to deploy backup officers. However, the officers on the scene were unable to prevent the violence.

    >> Before attacking Odeh, right-wing protesters also targeted Hadash-Ta'al MK Ofer Cassif, who spoke at the protest. Kassif told Haaretz that #Hadash members at the scene were spat on, thrown at, and targets of attacks...

    # English version

As talks on a ceasefire and hostage deal stall and the Israeli army continues to kill dozens of Palestinians every day, some while waiting in line for food, the need for an agreement just feels more urgent than ever. This horror and the abandonment of the hostages simply cannot continue any longer. But oppression of Palestinians is not just happening in Gaza. In our society, crime in the Arab community is rising fast, and our government and police have all but encouraged it.

For so many Palestinian, Bedouin, and Druze citizens, underpolicing, underfunding, and violent crime in the community has been the reality for decades, but it’s peaked since the start of the war on Gaza and under this government. So we just launched a huge campaign to build community resilience against the crime epidemic. The campaign, which is titled “Only Together We Can,” is our answer to the intolerable situation

The campaign will encourage community projects and initiatives, guide local leaders, help create internal protections against violence and crime, and ultimately demand change at an institutional level. We’ll create local groups in about 50 towns and villages with the goal of growing them, recruiting leaders from within these circles, and putting on events that can bring the community together.

Not only are we taking steps to empower local communities and Arab society, but we are also saying loudly that we are all in this together. Our solidarity is always important, but in times of crisis and abandonment by the state, it’s indispensable.

Recently, Jewish-Palestinian solidarity was on full display with the protests against Palestinian member of Knesset Ayman Odeh’s attempted impeachment. We launched a pressure campaign aimed at opposition leaders encouraging them to vote no, and mobilized Jews and Palestinians to take to the streets, sign onto our petition, and say loud and clear that we will not stand for this racist, political silencing! And on Monday, Odeh’s impeachment failed after not enough votes were gathered. This was a powerful reminder that we can stand up against intimidation and silencing together when it’s needed the most.

We know that our far-right government tried to remove Odeh to silence Palestinian citizens and their elected representatives. And we're fighting every day for a future where this silencing and intimidation doesn’t happen, a future where Jews and Palestinians can live free, safe, and equal lives. Can you help us get there by taking the next step as a Friend of Standing Together with a monthly donation? Our Friends are crucial allies in this struggle, and they let us plan for real, long-term change.

    # 1/6

    # 1/6

Yesterday, Israel’s parliament tried to impeach Palestinian MK Ayman Odeh, leader of the Joint List party.

    The reason?

A statement saying he is "happy to see the hostages and prisoners released. Next we must free both peoples from the burden of the occupation."

    # 2/6

A ridiculous pretext for expelling a democratically elected representative and a continuation of our extremist government's judicial overhaul.

    But it didn't work.

Not enough votes were gathered for his impeachment, so the move failed.

    # 3/6

It failed after people across the country took to the streets and made noise to stop it.

While political infighting clinched Odeh’s win, this is a testament to the determination of all of us, Jews and Palestinians, to rise up against our government’s racism and fascism

    # 4/6

But in spite of this setback for our extremist government, they haven’t stopped trying to advance racist policy.

And this attempt sets an extremely dangerous precedent

    # 5/6

We must see it for what it is: A brazen move to cement right-wing power and control across the land, a part of Netanyahu’s ongoing judicial overhaul which seeks to give the government unchecked power.

    # 6/6

    Our role is clear.

As Palestinians and Jews who love this land and its people, we must continue fighting against this authoritarianism and racism.

Because when we build power and organize to win, we can change our reality together

  9. The #Knesset will vote today on dismissing Joint List MK Ayman Odeh. Three prominent US senators including Bernie Sanders condemned the dismissal effort as an attack on democracy. German parliamentarians and Arab local authority heads also oppose the move. The dismissal requires 90 Knesset members’ support.

    Hebrew zoha.org.il/138609/

The senators noted that Odeh has advocated for peace, justice, and Jewish-Arab partnership for over a decade, and that the expulsion effort directly responds to his calls for Gaza ceasefire, ending occupation, and a political solution. They warned the move sends a “chilling message” to Palestinian citizens of Israel that their representation is conditional.

    sanders.senate.gov/press-relea

Well, the next time someone parrots the tired about #Israel being the “only democracy in the Middle East” line, remind them that democracies don’t expel elected representatives for calling for peace. This is textbook #authoritarianism - using parliamentary procedures to silence dissent and purge opposition voices.

What’s particularly offensive is the deafening silence from U.S. Democratic leadership, the very ones who are complicit in the genocide in Gaza through financing Israel’s war machine. While senators like Sanders, Welch, and Van Hollen find their voices, where are Schumer, Pelosi, and the party establishment? Their absence speaks volumes about how thoroughly they’ve abandoned any pretense of defending democratic principles when it conflicts with their political calculations.

This isn’t just about one MK - it’s about establishing precedent for political purging. Today it’s Odeh for advocating ceasefire; tomorrow it’s any voice that challenges the narrative.

  11. #DemocraticBacksliding / Likud MK threatens Arab colleague with firing squad during removal hearing

The Knesset Committee discussed removing MK Ayman Odeh following his January social media post expressing joy over “the release of hostages and prisoners” and calling to “free both peoples from the yoke of occupation.” During the hearing, Likud MK Osher Shkalim shouted at Odeh: “In another country they would put you in front of a firing squad.” Committee chair Ofir Katz called Odeh “the eighth front” and said “your presence contaminates the Knesset, there’s no place here for such terrorists.”

The legal advisor clarified the discussion must focus only on the January tweet, not other statements. Odeh defended his position, stating the government “commits crimes against humanity in Gaza” and accused officials who “justified killing 50,000 Gazans” of lacking moral authority.

The Association for Civil Rights condemned the proceedings as “fascism.”

    haaretz.co.il/news/politi/2025

Apropos ‘democratic backsliding’ - I should note I’m using the term quite liberally here. Israel was never truly a #democracy, as ethno-states by definition cannot be. But this authoritarian drift now targets anyone perceived as an enemy of the state of course. See kolektiva.social/@oatmeal/1147

  13. #Palestine / Israeli Right-Winger initiate ouster of Palestinian Arab MK over hostage release statement

[…] This time, all of us, Knesset members from the right and the left, need to stand up and take action. To protect our citizens and preserve the honor of the people of Israel and the honor of the citizens of Israel.

Israel’s “honor” is allegedly at stake.

Right-wing members of the Knesset have begun the process of trying to oust Hadash-Ta'al MK Ayman Odeh for expressing happiness about the release of hostages and prisoners and calling for an end to the occupation, with Likud MK Avichai Boaron seeking 70 signatures to initiate the removal.

This follows a previous failed attempt to oust MK Ofer Cassif for supporting South Africa's case at the #ICJ regarding the #Gaza war, highlighting the legal provision allowing for the removal of a Knesset member with a 90-vote majority for supporting armed struggle against Israel by an enemy state or terror group.
