  2. #DemocraticBacksliding / Likud MK threatens Arab colleague with firing squad during removal hearing

The Knesset Committee discussed removing MK Ayman Odeh following his January social media post expressing joy over “the release of hostages and prisoners” and calling to “free both peoples from the yoke of occupation.” During the hearing, Likud MK Osher Shkalim shouted at Odeh: “In another country they would put you in front of a firing squad.” Committee chair Ofir Katz called Odeh “the eighth front” and said “your presence contaminates the Knesset, there’s no place here for such terrorists.”

The legal advisor clarified the discussion must focus only on the January tweet, not other statements. Odeh defended his position, stating the government “commits crimes against humanity in Gaza” and accused officials who “justified killing 50,000 Gazans” of lacking moral authority.

The Association for Civil Rights condemned the proceedings as “fascism.”

Apropos ‘democratic backsliding’ - I should note I’m using the term quite liberally here. Israel was never truly a #democracy, as ethno-states by definition cannot be. But this authoritarian drift now targets anyone perceived as an enemy of the state of course. See kolektiva.social/@oatmeal/1147
