  8. 🆕 Check out the latest episode of the cloudonaut podcast: Stephen Kuenzli and I discuss how to prioritize writing IAM policies that follow the least privilege principle in projects with though deadlines. On top of that, Stephen shares insights on how to build an agent helping teams to analyze and fix their security findings.

  11. ❓Which of the new features announced during re:Invent or in the weeks leading up to it will you implement immediately in a real project?

  12. Thought of doing a video on some first principles when it comes to architecting and developing cloud applications securely.

Most projects don't fail to follow these principles at first, but more frequently, they fail to keep adhering to them as they go through the project lifecycle.

I've tried to keep the details cloud agnostic as much as possible.

  13. ❓I'm starting to get the feeling that AWS has given up on the me-central-1 and me-south-1 regions. So far, I haven't found a way to get any information about the recovery of either region. Have you, #awscommunity?

  14. 🆕 Running into AWS service quotas can cause troubles and even downtimes. Therefore, I had a look into Service Quotas Automatic Management. Unfortunately, the new feature is not as helpful and reliable as it could be.

  15. Where to find the #awscommunity tooting about the latest and greatest #reinvent announcements? Whom shall I follow?

  16. My feature wish for re:Invent 2025: a VPC endpoint that enables access to all AWS services at once.

But I suspect that profit is being optimized here rather than customer wishes being fulfilled.

  17. Have you heard about AWS's new DynamoDB multi-attribute keys? I've written a blog post explaining what they are and why they matter.

  18. The AWS Community celebrates the release of AWS Capabilities by Region, an overview of the service and feature availability by region.

But that's not what customers asked for. At least, not me.

I'm asking to close the gaps between regions instead. The current situation creates unnecessary complexity.

Focus on rolling out all services and features to all regions, please. That's the customer-centric approach here.

  19. 🎉 @michael and I are celebrating a huge milestone today. Over the years, we published 400 articles on our blog. Up until this day, we enjoy sharing our learnings and observations about Amazon Web Services. Thanks for reading and sharing our content!

  20. ❓How would you monitor a workflow executed by 3rd party system?

I've implemented a solution with Step Functions, Lambda, DynamoDB, and API Gateway. I am eager to hear other ideas and feedback. 👇

  21. ❓ Did you know, that the Lambda runtimes do not include the latest AWS SDKs? For example, the Lambda runtime node22.x comes with the AWS Node.js SDK version 3.774.0 which was released about two months ago.

I did not expect that. Wanted to use a new feature which is not possible with the dated SDK version.

  22. ⚠️ Stumbling block when migrating from Amazon Linux 2 to Amazon Linux 2023:

/tmp is no longer mawscommunitye root volume but on tmpfs. As tmpfs stores files in memory, the maximum size of /tmp is determined by the EC2 instance type’s memory capacity.

Either avoid storing large files under /tmp or disable tmpfs for /mnt by using the following commands:

    sudo systemctl mask tmp.mount
    sudo systemctl stop tmp.mount

  24. What's your preferred method to move data between DynamoDB tables? For example, when moving DynamoDB tables to another account. Bonus points for methods, that work with IaC tools like Terraform.

  25. Are you interested in joining the AWS Community Builders program? Applications are open for new builders! The program is for technical builders who create content focused on AWS services and comes with some amazing benefits, like sessions with AWS experts and promotional credits. You can read more about the program on AWS's website.

Applications are open until January 20th, and determinations should be made in March.

  26. Compared to the CDK the cfn-modules are very simple to use. It's just a suite of CloudFormation templates that you stick together with nested stacks. npm is used to install and update the modules.

  27. If you're running a cloud environment where different accounts represent different environments, set them up consistently! Use IaC to help ensure environments are set up the same.

I just got off a 4 hour call that could have been avoided if security groups had been set up consistently.

  28. Just back from an incredible week at #reInvent! My second time, and it was as amazing as ever

Learned so much, met old friends, made new ones... love the vibrant, welcoming #AWSCommunity

Huge thanks to AWS for the Heroes perks & to everyone I connected with. See you in '25!🚀

  29. 2️⃣ Terraform/OpenTofu/CloudFormation/CDK state will be broken after the upgrade as Aurora Serverless v2 requires a ServerlessV2ScalingConfiguration as well as a separate DB instance of type db.serverless.

🧐 Double check that you have migrated all Aurora Serverless v1 cluster to v2!

  30. Didn't AWS announce to shut down Aurora Serverless v1 at the end of the year?

Strangely, no hints can be found in the documentation. And it is still possible to create Serverless v1 clusters.

    Did I miss anything?

  31. Last night, AWS added support for S3 as a failed-event destination for asynchronous Lambda invocations. This means you don't have to worry about the event payload size anymore. It also makes it easy to persist and potentially report on problematic events.

  33. Since AWS added Lambda support to AWS FIS, I've been experimenting with it and have been impressed with what it can enable. You may have heard of Netflix's Chaos Monkey, but there is more than that to chaos engineering.

Check out this blog post, where I touch on chaos engineering and dig into AWS FIS's Lambda support.

  34. 🧠 But, ElastiCache Serverless requires the clients/applications to support Valkey/Redis in cluster mode. Also, connections are TLS only.

✋ That's a blocker for some legacy applications. At least, I failed to get Mastodon and Sidekiq working on ElastiCache powered by Valkey. (2/2)

  35. I'm fortunate to have been in the technology field long enough that the certifications I got at the beginning of my career are beginning to expire 😭.

Fortunately for you, I've done some research into the RE-certification process and jotted down my new goals and what I'm going to do to achieve them.

Boxes on a diagram never the issue. It's the lines.

Serverless is simpler application code, but more integration

    Reusable patterns explain your intent.

One level up from normal flow diagram - generic terms like aggregate, change data capture rather than specific technology like SQS

Help choose between competing AWS products eg Eventbridge vs SQS vs SNS

Then use same high level terms in code

Change is constant. Compose events to make a service.
Need diverse engineering skills, as things like observability and queue dynamics as important business logic

Serverless first is not serverless-must - end to end cost efficient and effective enough at that cost

See your vendor lockin as instead a partnership with them providing training etc

Every stack should have a dashboard, for trends, not just alerts for now
