#awakari — Public Fediverse posts

@akurilov's awakari scraper tried to follow my account, despite the fact I've configured my profile in accordance with the Mastodon-specific opt-out instructions, located in a Markdown file, in a disused repository, with a sign on the door saying "TODO".

Assuming this was an accident, it's the kind of bug that responsible development practices would never allow to reach production.

I would recommend domain-blocking (activitypub.)awakari.com.

I have a ”Custom Feed“ custom feed, and I just saw it spammed by #Awakari because they added feed links in their posts. I don't want to deal with this. I'm feed-blocking every Awakari account I can find. Do not shadowban ("needs-review") me Bluesky Social PBC.

what is going on #activitypup ? can anyone tell me something about it? That's what I keep thinking, they seem like they're just looking to index things for searching, which is why we've never bothered to block them or go after them before. To be honest, if that's all they want to do, and they're actually going to start asking permission, I'm not only happy about that, I think that will make them a better service because it cuts down on the people that aren't trying to have big public accounts.

I just got a follow request from #Awakari, with its own detailed and formatted message, and it never occurred to me that that's the sort of thing that #ActivityPub supports, though it does make sense.

I'm also a little surprised because my understanding has been that the main reason they are controversial is because they don't get permission to crawl people's profiles, but here they've sent a customized agreement type thing for me to look at...

Does anyone know what Awakari
([email protected]) is supposed to be?

I got a follow request from that bot, and decided that blocking the entire domain would be better than trying to figure out the TOS.

I could be convinced otherwise, however.

This is better than how the "proxy account" in #Misskey / #Sharkey does its #followbot thing actually, which AFAIK doesn't discriminate on who to follow as long as someone in the instance has added them to the list (even if a local user is already following them, and I thought the follow bot will not bother following in that case but I guess I'm wrong)

I think our -key follow bots can learn a thing or two from #Awakari. ​:seija_coffee:​
