Curtiss Model D Pusher, 1912 (replica). Glenn Curtiss was engaged, sometimes in a legal sense, in a fight with the Wright Brothers for dominance in the world of early aviation - Curtiss machines had ailerons, rather than the Wright-designed wing warping, for roll control. Although the Model D suffered, as did most of the early pusher designs, from higher drag due to the wide-spaced rear fuselage frame members, it was still a useful machine, performing both the first take-off from a vessel (Nov. 1910) and the first landing (Jan. 1911). Goodyear FG-1D Corsair, take off. This aircraft was, like many other Corsairs, built by the Goodyear Co. under licence, hence the US Navy designation FG. A number of Goodyear-built Corsairs were supplied to the Royal Navy under Lend Lease during WW2. The model corresponds to the Vought F4U-1. Corsairs were also built by the Brewster Aeronautical Corporation, but that contract was terminated early.
