Curtiss Model D Pusher, 1912 (replica). Glenn Curtiss was engaged, sometimes in a legal sense, in a fight with the Wright Brothers for dominance in the world of early aviation - Curtiss machines had ailerons, rather than the Wright-designed wing warping, for roll control. Although the Model D suffered, as did most of the early pusher designs, from higher drag due to the wide-spaced rear fuselage frame members, it was still a useful machine, performing both the first take-off from a vessel (Nov. 1910) and the first landing (Jan. 1911). DC-3 Eastern Airlines, New England Air Museum, Connecticut Eastern Airlines bore the title 'The Great Silver Fleet' on their airliners for some years. They were also a significant user of Douglas's masterpiece, the DC-3. Here we see a fine example in the New England Air Museum in Connecticut. This aircraft was built as a DC-3, but taken over by the USAAF on the production line, and issued as a C-49J.
