Decided to break my #ToniCatchUpThread into a few separate more manageable threads. This first one is some highlights from my #Autumn2023.
After my Dad died, but before the funeral, I already had a caravan holiday in Blair Athol booked for my sister-in-law's 40th birthday. I was mourning and obviously in shock and waves of sadness affected the mood of the trip, but I still managed to have fun.

On the way home from work, I got off the train a stop earlier to check on Shimizu Inari, a small local shrine. In late autumn, they usually light up the colorful leaves at night, and I was able to capture a few photos. iPhone 15 Pro, unedited straight out of camera. Third photo looks brighter due to shooting in “night mode”.

Prudhoe Bay area, Alaska warmest November on record. The Deadhorse Airport (North Slope, Inupiat county) reported a November 2023 average temperature of 13.0F (-10.6C). That’s more than 11F (6C) above normal. The previous mildest November was 2017 with an average temperature of 11.1F (-11.6C). Sea ice continues to increase in the seas north and west of Alaska, especially near the coast. Beaufort Sea is now iced over. The overall Chukchi #SeaIce extent as of Nov 25 is almost exactly the same as this time last year and overall the 11th lowest for the date since 1979. Lack of ice on the Russian Bering Sea coast is notable for this point in the season. #akwx #Arctic #Autumn2023 #Climate

Some leaves still have a little chlorophyll remaining, but that will soon be broken down and taken in by the tree. The leaves on the ground are excellent soil conditioners, as they are a feed for worms, other soil vertebrates and invertebrates, nematodes, fungi and bacteria. Say goodnight: Tuesday saw the last sunset of the year at Ulġuniq (Wainright, Inupiat country), at 70.64ºN the second-most northerly community in Alaska. This FAA webcam image is from almost exactly solar noon, with the sun at its highest point in the sky for the day. Next sunrise will be on January 20, 2024. Day trip to Takasaki (Part 3)
Last Saturday we went to Takasaki, the largest city in Gunma Prefecture. Here is a set of unprocessed, out-of-camera photos from the third stop, Tokumeien Garden. We came at a good time to enjoy a fine display of seasonal colors. The last photo was taken from the veranda of the garden's central residence, where we had green tea and sweets.
