Decent people must stand united against the sociopaths of the world, or they'll destroy us and decency. Stalin knew Europe was finished pre-WWII because the countries would not stick together. Hitler and Stalin picked them off one at a time, and they endured decades of murderous oppression as a result. Countless millions died and countless more basically lived wasted lives.

  6. Elder voters can easily keep any #autocrat in power in a country, for a very long time. They're universally forming the majority.

What they can't do is keep their sons and daughters from seeing how free life can be elsewhere, and lock them in, decade after decade.

It's their choice: either see your kids and grandchildren often, being part of their lives; or at best once per year, when they'll visit you from abroad, in your self-inflicted shithole life they will never choose to share, and will never choose to confine their own kids to.

  11. Those Who Sided With Viktor Orban Will Be Damned, Authoritarianism Is A Loser

I spent some time this afternoon upstairs looking for a column in a back issue of Foreign Affairs. I knew it contained the essence of what I wanted to stress in this column. That followed the most welcome news that Peter Magyar's center-right Tisza party was projected to win Hungary's parliamentary election, bringing an end to 16 years of illiberal actions and authoritarian rule under Viktor Orban, a far-right ally of both Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. We witnessed […]

  17. A quotation from Montesquieu

Extreme obedience assumes ignorance in the one who obeys; it assumes ignorance even in the one who commands; he does not have to deliberate, to doubt, or to reason; he has only to want.

Spirit of Laws [The Spirit of the Laws; De l’esprit des lois], Book 4, ch. 3 (4.3) (1748) [tr. Cohler/Miller/Stone (1989)]
