  1. #introduction

    Hi everyone,
I’ve spent a lot of time reading discussions around here and finally decided it was time to stop lurking and actually join the conversation.
My interests mostly revolve around #InternationalLaw, #InternationalRelations, #Geopolitics and broader #Security issues. I tend to follow topics related to authoritarian systems, strategic competition and the way global events reshape our world.
I also spend a lot of time trying to understand Russia’s role as a security challenge and the broader issue of how modern #Autocracies operate. I strongly support #Ukraine and believe that defending freedom and democratic values is not only a regional issue, but something that affects all of us. #StandWithUkraine
That said, I’m here more to exchange ideas than to deliver speeches. #Microblogging seems like an interesting place to think out loud, learn from different perspectives and occasionally challenge my own assumptions.
    Looking forward to interesting discussions.
    Still learning, still curious.

  3. Don’t fall for authoritarian hype. It can be stopped

#Populist #nationalist surge exposes new, unavoidable truth we ignore at our peril: #authoritarian #ethnic nationalism

It's replaced neoliberalism as dominant ideology, giving a world of firsts:

    - America 1st
    - India 1st
    - China first
    - Russia 1st
    - My tribe 1st

    Nationalism explains why world now has 91 #autocracies & only 88 #democracies

It's force behind almost every 1 of world’s 59 border conflicts & civil wars

This is part 1 of the Silicon Valley billionaires’ plan to take over the whole world.

  7. #RepublicOfGeorgia: First year of #Georgia’s ‘foreign agent’ law shows how #autocracies are replicating #Russian model − and speeding up the time frame

    Published: March 28, 2025 6:25am EDT

"#Autocracy is on the move worldwide and becoming more resilient.

"One of the driving forces behind this phenomenon is something scholars call '#AuthoritarianLearning,' a process by which autocratic leaders study each other and adapt tactics based on what appears to work, and how to proceed when they encounter #resistance.

"Take Georgia. The ruling Georgian Dream party has steered the Caucasus nation from a path toward democracy back to autocracy – and it has done so by learning from Russia. In particular, it adopted a '#ForeignAgent' law in May 2024 – legislation that came straight from #VladimirPutin’s playbook.

"Sold to the public as increasing #transparency, the legislation has been utilized to persecute Georgia’s #opposition and arrest #dissidents with impunity.

"As researchers examining the structure and effects of autocratic regimes, we view Georgia’s first year of its foreign agent law as an example of how politicians are not only learning the tactics of Russian authoritarianism but improving on them in a shorter time frame."

  9. Trump’s Attacks on Press Freedom Are Paving the Way for #Authoritarianism
A leading global #democracy research institute says democratic “backsliding” must be turned around quickly—warning that after 10 years, recovery is “close to impossible.”
For the first time in more than 20 years, by #2025 #DemocracyReport’s estimate, the world now has more #autocracies (91) than #democracies (88), with liberal democracies (29) now least common regime type.

  11. Trump is testing waters on Ukraine to see how far he can go elsewhere

A ‘win’ in #Ukraine may lead Trump to act in #Gaza, #Canada or #Greenland

Globally #Trump’s focus is cooperating with world’s leading #autocracies & #oligarchies to get #US get richer at the expense of just about everyone else.

In part, this is because the Trump administration is testing the waters to see just how far and how rapidly it can go.

#Autocratic regimes like #Russia are increasingly bold in efforts to undermine norms defining democratic #WorldOrder after WWII

A month after #RussiaInvadedUkraine, Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov said “this is not about Ukraine at all, but world order”

“The current war is fateful, epoch-making moment in modern history,” he continued. “It reflects battle over what world order will be.”

agreeing to censorship on their platforms,

She has been prominent among those writers shining a light on the ways that 🔸coordinated propaganda strategies in autocracies are fuelling division in the west.🔸

♦️Getting an American president who doesn’t like Nato in office is a lot cheaper than fighting wars♦️

“Of course, I don’t think either Trumpism or the Brexit campaign were foreign ideas,” she says.

“I mean, because I worked at the Spectator in the 1990s I knew many people who were anti-EU then
and who had grassroots deep in the English countryside.

But as we know, what the Russians do, and now others, 🔷they don’t invent political movements – they amplify existing groups.”🔷

In the case of #Trump, she suggests,
“he is clearly somebody who they cultivated for a long time.

Not as a spy or anything.
But they were offering him opportunities,
you know, he was trying to do [property] deals there [in Moscow].
    And he’s been anti-Nato since the 80s.
He’s openly scorned American allies all of his life.
In one of his books, he talks about what a mistake it was for the US to be fighting the second world war.

👉So of course, the Russians would want someone like that,
because their aim is to break up Nato. 👈

❌And if they can help get an American president who doesn’t like Nato in office, that’s a huge achievement.
It’s a lot cheaper than fighting wars.”

Our article combines insights from research in #Russia and #China over the years. We argue that conducting ethnographic research in #autocracies makes outsider roles more desirable for identifying the unspoken rules, assumptions, and taken-for-granted aspects of everyday politics in autocracies. Moreover, outsider roles provide ethical advantages in consent, value, and risk.

Good talk and good to see the point of #democracies having common interests vs #autocracies now having become something *obvious*, well, at least for the #Taiwanese.

Any technology, funding/investment, knowhow, data from democracies exposing potential weaknesses... still flowing into dictatorships makes the despots more belligerent and all democracies less safe.

  36. #China will use that immense #tiktok database for an #AItraining #dataset. Why? Because that is their one real leverage, #autocracies inevitably seek to self-perpetuate and with individual privacy rights they're particularly unscrupulous (goes double for Americans, triple for Asian-Americans).
