It's been a year since I've read a fantasy book and I've just started #ThePrioryOfTheOrangeTree by Samantha Shannon and I am LOVING IT! 🥰 📖

It is 848 pages long, which is making me so happy as books are never long enough...

Fantasy is the best escape from stress and I've missed it so much AND there's an equally massive (880 pages) prequel; I'm just so happy!

And the cover, perfect!

I’ve never seen the documentary, the trailer was enough. It made me feel seen, and that I am not alone, and that there are others like me.

Even tho it says ‘women’ I think the emotion in this trailer is universally #Autistic

So I need to say a thing, it’s a happy thing.
I got my pathology results back yesterday, and my CT scan results back today (I’m in hospital) and:

I DON’T HAVE CANCER!!!!!!! 🎉🥳💗😆💛😁

I can’t stop crying, it feels like I’ve been given my life back!!

SO GRATEFUL!! 💛💛💛

@DavidTanner @Unatributed @libreture @bookstodon I've been using #GoodReads which is easy to use and I quite like, also so many detailed book reviews.

Then because I love all things #Fediverse I tried #BookWyrm but it felt a bit lonely, so am now trying #StoryGraph which is better IMO than BookWyrm but I think I'm going to stick with Goodreads.

@loops @actuallyautistic I've always lived my life in 6-12 month blocks; it seems presumptuous to plan any further.

I do dream, but solid plans have always been within 6-12 months.

IMO I don't think the inherent curiosity within our community gels with one career.

My initial passion was IT, I was The #Linux Nerd, but then it paled and #Law became my new joy and I haven't tired of that, yet, but illness has sadly negated any further study.

Now my joy & passion is the #AutisticBookClub !

Just finished reading But You Don't Look Autistic At All by Bianca Toeps. I really enjoyed it. She gives a good mix of scientific fact and "this is what autism is like for me" and "this is what autism is like for some other autistic people I've talked to." Highly recommended. #ActuallyAutistic #AutisticBookClub

Are you an #ActuallyAutistic who loathes 'being sold to'?
Whenever I post about the #AutisticBookClub meetings I feel so conflicted, because I feel like I'm trying to 'sell' something (even tho everything to do with the #BookClub is free) it still feels awkward.

Which is why ads will be behind CW's in future, to minimise #Autistic discomfort, for those who feel like me, and don't want to be pushed to do something.

I'm not a brand, I'm a person and my aim is not to irritate.

There are many barriers to an official #Autism diagnosis; exorbitant cost, gatekeeping doctors, psychs who don’t understand Autism and refuse a diagnosis on the basis of irrelevancies such as ‘you can make eye contact’, bias against minorities, etc…

@lanmar We run 2 groups for each book, to accommodate everyone, did you see the second meeting?

We have people attend from many different timezones; North America, South America, Australia, UK, Europe (from Italy to Finland) and New Zealand. (I don’t ask anyone where they live, but ppl sometimes say where they live.)

So if you live in any of those locations, you should be ok! 😁 But let me know if you’re still unsure…

@lanmar There are two places to discuss the books; we have a Goodreads Autistic Book Club and a private Discord group for those who have attended at least one Book Club meeting.

The Discord group is much more active than the Goodreads group!

@neilgurney Well personally I am a huge #fantasy ⚔️fan! But whenever I post about fantasy it gets zero engagement so we stick to books that appeal to the majority & books by Autistic authors.

But I’m always open to suggestions if people want to read a certain title!
