  5. News Summary: Harlequin’s AI Microdrama Deal Sparks Backlash; Publishers Support Music Industry against Anthropic

The publishing industry has had a week of not seeming to be able to get its story straight on AI. I say story, but what I mean in the first instance is AI-generated animated microdramas. Video microdramas have been in the news several times of late. They are very much in demand with audiences and provide an opportunity for those writers who love producing serialized works with short episodes and cliffhangers aplenty.

Remember how I started the week by contrasting the Paris Book Festival, where threatened boycotts over AI flooding the market had forced Amazon to withdraw its sponsorship, with London Book Fair, hosted in the less radical home of the open letter?

  18. I currently have about a dozen papers under review. Now imagine: a drone hits my window — and who will keep emailing editors and reviewers then? 😅

Stewart Manley published his brilliant idea in #ResearchEvaluation the “exclusive option”. Authors could submit to multiple journals at once, and interested editors request an exclusive right to review.

    :doi: doi.org/10.1093/reseval/rvaf02

No duplicated #peerreview. No endless delays. This could shake up academic publishing!

  26. TIL: Whatever #ebooks or documents you put on a #Kindle, they're being indexed & uploaded automatically to the #Amazon server if the device has an internet connection. Just found out with an unpublished #manuscript that someone wanted to read on their Kindle and it ended up on the Amazon server, although it was put onto the Kindle manually via cable. Whatever you do with Amazon devices, you're adding everything to Amazon's data collection. #Enshittification #AuthorRights #IntellectualProperty

  32. In what countries do the government compensate authors for library loans of their books and what are your schemes called?

Great news out of Australia today that Australian authors who have enjoyed a lending right system (PLR & ELR) for print books for years (ie: we get paid per loan to compensate us for the book sale), will now also be compensated for ebook and audiobook loans (DLR)! Great comments from new government Arts minister about the importance of the arts too after years of neglect.

Thanks to the Australian Society of Authors (ASA) for so much advocacy on this issue.

  34. @eingfoan @Mastodon @jerry @Gargron

#Mastodon currently removes all #Metadata from Pictures. This is enforced, you hae no choice to keep intentionally embedded data such as #AuthorInformation or #License type.

From a #photograpers viewpoint, I consider this enforced incapacitation of my #AuthorRights. Metada are a vital part of my work. I need a choice on what I share.

You don't force musicians to strip their shared songs of all information on title, album, singer or composer.
