P.S. And clearly there are parallels between people using ghostwriters for self-expression and people using genAI for writing sruff they then claim to be theirs. A similar lack of a sense of authenticity and a lack of understanding of the creative struggle.

I have a related experience from the client side of ghostwriting.
N is a godmother to our children. She's a successful young professional in her own field, unrelated to art or fiction. A wonderful person, a good friend of ours. N had a children's book ghostwritten to order, and published it in her own name. The plot was hers, the writing wasn't.
I find it so hard to understand how anyone would want to do such a thing. The apparent absence of any sense of personal authenticity and artistic truth troubles me deeply. We love N, she is a trusted friend, but on this issue there is a gulf between us.
(She is two generations younger than we are, the gulf I experience may be generational. I know that we are fortunate to have such a cross-generational friendship, and I accept those dissonances as the price we pay for it.)
