Stumps on day four in Sydney. England are 302-8 in their second innings, 119 ahead overall. There have been times when Australia have flunked small final innings chases - Headingley and Edgbaston in 1981 being two such cases, the SCG in 1894 another, and there was one in 1998-9 when Dean Headley did the damage, as well as one against South Africa in the same era when Fanie de Villiers was the destroyer. Australia definitely favourites though.

There are two players in the current England XI who need dropping after this match pretty much whatever happens on days four and five: Ollie Pope and Brydon Carse. I would bring Potts in in place of Carse, replacing brainless pace with crafty fast medium. For Pope I would bring in Bashir, playing Jacks as the front line batter he is, either in the number three slot, or at six with Stokes moving up to three.

Leaving aside Jacks, England in this match have had three proper bowlers plus Stokes. Of the three only Archer is actually a skilful enough bowler for his pace to be useful at test level, and with no proper support he has not been able to impose pressure - it takes tight bowling at both ends to do that.

This is poor from England. The ever-increasing lead is not actually the chief concern here. The problem is the time that this lower order resistance, assisted by poor England tactics, is taking out of the game, bringing us ever close to the floodlights taking control, when it is famously difficult to start an innings.
