This is an excellent, concise analysis of the different ways the state is being captured by private, vested interests. By #AustraliaRemade (@_MillieRooney).
"The state is constantly changing and being changed. The way the state works, who is given and who takes power, is constantly shifting and always contested. Deciding to consciously affect this flux is not radical. It is simply paying attention to the way things are evolving and then stepping into the fray as an intentional force.
We can either sit passively and watch this happen or we can remember that the forces controlling the state are only powerful so long as citizens comply with ideas, practices and actions that legitimise their exercise of power.
To do this, we need to understand not only what the state is, but how it is currently being changed and repurposed by those who seek to gather money and power at the expense of the citizenry."

When is it not "intentional" @phillboyack ? What is built without government approval?
The problem is not "unintentional side-effects". It's probable impacts that are deliberately ignored.
For example, flooding below Warragamba dam commonly leads to calls for the dam wall to be raised. That would inevitably result in more land on the floodplain being viewed (by developers) as safe for housing. "Safe" is a relative term. Affordable insurance is improbable.
Developers will happily reap profits from flood-prone land. They will not accept responsibility for the consequences.
The consent authority for development is local government. Government is not an "other". "Government" is us.
If we encourage residence in risky areas, then who should bear the consequences? To my mind, indemnity should be Public Good.

For good reasons, Australia once had public sector insurers (since privatised).

So how did everyone sleep last night? It was strange to wake up knowing that the world had at once changed irrevocably while at the same time remaining just as it was.
The election result is not what we had hoped for, yet regardless of who is in the White House, the work to be done remains the same.
It doesn’t change the beauty of the sunrise, or the love you feel for your children, or the urgency to act on climate change.
Our work remains the same.

Imagine if as a country we take this moment to decide, as we wrote in the vision for an Australia reMADE, that “Australia does good in the world. We stand on our own two feet as we develop a fair and just approach to working with other countries. We do not blindly follow others, no matter how powerful.”

I'm on the NSW coast where in the space of two days we've had fire and flood warnings.
Our new report, “Care through Disaster: A new lens on what’s needed to thrive and survive in tumultuous times” shows that connected and cohesive communities are themselves essential tools for keeping communities safe and well.
This new research shows that preparing for disaster begins not with the fire trucks but with relationships and policies that build solidarity and maintain community cohesion. We need to be investing in community connection as if our lives depend on it - because they do.

Power to Persuade has republished my Alone Australian blog...
"Dr Millie Rooney, co-director of Australia Remade and long-time contributor here at Power to Persuade, has had some great ideas for new reality TV shows, following the success of ‘Alone Australia’. The question is - do we have contestants going it alone to survive, or a team effort to re-imagine a way for everyone to thrive?"

Fantastic to get to talk about the potential for better collaboration between community and the public service on the IPAA podcast.
We talk about the notion of the public good, and what it means to centre it in the public service.
Get in touch if you're interested in the project!

So pinch me now... but I had extraordinary privilege of speaking with outgoing Welsh Future Generations Commissioner, Sophie Howe.
For the past seven years Sophie's job has been to inspire, harrangue, encourage and hold to account Welsh public agencies to act in the interests of Welsh people and future generations.
Guided by the seven wellbeing principles developed over extensive collaboration with the Welsh population, Sophie's job and impact has been astounding.

Very excited!
I'm about to interview the outgoing Welsh Future Generations Commissioner, Sophie Howe (you can learn more about her work at this simple blog - www.australiaremade.org/blog/government-can-do-amazing-things).
Anyone got any questions for her?

After the success of Alone Australia, I’ve had a great idea for a new reality TV show.
It’s called “Alone Australian” and we get to watch ten plucky people dropped, completely alone, into the middle of a housing crisis and rely only on their wits and a dodgy internet connection to access the services they need to survive.

Who else wants to be a disaster ostrich + not think about the next climate calamity??
Better yet, who wants to feel that as a society we're done what we can do avoid it but we're prepared for whatever disaster might strike?
What do we need to ensure that we are all cared for?
Join me this Saturday or next Tuesday for a community conversation about what kind of care infrastructure we need.

"Wellbeing" isn't controversial. We all want our governments to promote wellbeing - via healthy, safe, prosperous and cohesive societies. But we might disagree on the best ways to get there.

"Two things I know to be true: without individuals making time to care and be cared for, our society would crumble. And our carers need more support – a whole new 'infrastructure of care'".

Back at work... could be happier...
Luckily I've returned to find the podcast fairies have been at work and I can share with you this fabulous conversation Regions reIMAGINED: Caring for our communities. Why is it that a fence line on a National Park changes our care relationship with a piece of land? What does it look like to recognise care as a policy choice rather than just an individual responsibility? And who is up for a four-day work week?

Please join me Wednesday evening 6.30-8pm AEDT as I chat with Judy Horacek (AMAZING feminist cartoonist), Greg James (the first Indigenous Councillor for the Greater Shepparton Council) and Ali Thwaites (educator and youth activist) as we chat about CONTRIBUTION.
How to we value it? What infrastructure do we need to enable people to contribute and to recognise that contribution looks very very different depending on context.
There will be time for questions!

interesting Social Cohesion Report from the Scanlon Institute.
- Social cohesion increased during first couple of years of pandemic but is now declining.
- Population-wide support for multiculturalism is high and growing.
- Sense of belonging and connectedness in our neighbourhoods has increased since the pandemic but our sense of pride, belonging and justice as a nation are now at their lowest since 2007.
On this last point I wonder if it's to do with the accessibability of infrastructure to contribute and influence at a national level (as we talk about in our public good work - www.australiaremade.org/public-good and on our latest episode of The reMAKERS www.austaliaremade.org/podcast).
Well worth a read!

New #podcast episode from the #reMAKERS!

How do we use our understanding of our past to grapple with our present and our future? Do we have a national story and do we need one?

Feeling proud of myself today.
6 years ago I accidentally met David Ritter (Greenpeace AP CEO) at a dinner I wasn't supposed to be at.
He invited me to join him + a bunch of civil society leaders to a meeting to discuss a shared vision for this country. I found my place.
Today the seed that was planted at that meeting has sprouted into its own organisation that I am proud to lead.
we've been auspiced by Aus Conservation Foundation for a couple of years, but now we're off on our own!
What an absolute luxury it has been for me to get to do this work.
