Coal + gas systems produce waste continuously, every hour they run. Coal emits roughly 1,000 kg of CO2 per MWh, along with nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide, and fine particulates
Natural gas emits less CO2 from combustion, when upstream methane leakage and methane slip from turbines are included, lifecycle emissions rise to roughly 690 kg CO2e

Heatwaves, dangerous thunderstorms, Dangerous winds, Extreme Fire Danger for NSW, SA & Vic over next 36 hours
The majority of severe weather will result from the passage of a powerful front, however for South Australia and Victoria on Wednesday, a deepening offshore low has the potential to generate winds equal in strength to a category 2 tropical cyclone.
The low is likely to strengthen further on Wednesday as it passes through Bass Strait, with the central pressure dropping below 985hPa — the equivalent strength of a category 2 tropical cyclone
The unseasonable heat will combine with powerful winds, relatively low humidity, and rapidly drying soils to trigger the first extreme fire dangers of the season around Sydney, the Hunter, Illawarra and parts of the central west.
The risk is further exacerbated by dry lightning which could ignite multiple fires both on Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday.

Renewable records tumble for second day in a row, pushing fossil fuels to new lows
Coal in the last 12 months has accounted for 54% of the generation on the main grid, (NEam) but on Monday it was pushed to a new intantaneous low of 26.4%
Wind and solar alone accounted for 72.6% of total demand on the main grid, a new record.
Almost all of it, just over 64 %, came from solar – a mix of rooftop (44.4%) and large scale solar (19.7%)
