@joannejacobs While Australia bends over backwards for corporate overlords with endless mass immigration, those same overlords are racing to build workerless empires via AI. WiseTech just slashed 2,000 jobs (about 30% of staff) because 'manual coding is dead'. So what's the genius plan for the endless influx of low-skill migrants flooding in? Crickets.

26th January, 1788. The date white colonisation of this country began and with it, the systemic displacement of the world’s oldest, continuous living culture.

@MattHatton @bastardsheep There was a line in the classic @PaulinePantsdown song "I don't like it" that predicted this very moment.

I've been seeing my GP for near 30 years. He's in his seventies and always been pretty healthy but his long term locum of twenty years retired recently and he's now in his practice by himself.
He's often told me how difficult it is to get insurance and further how complex it has become just to stay in practice, that it is common among peers and colleagues to take early retirement or/and otherwise leave the field.
I don't know what else to say except that the idea he may retire (something he's always said he has no interest in doing) generates a fear in me I've not experienced since I was a small child. Without the support of this man I have zero doubt my life would be very different today, immeasurably worse.
We really should be thinking about how we can ensure GPs feel supported in this country, it never seems to come up when folks campaign for office.

I see the #Crumbmaiden has defeated #SideshowBob for the #Liberal leadership.
I wonder how long that lasts before the constant undermining and backstabbing leads to a #Libspill. The conservatives have form when a centrist leader tries to plot a middle/right road - cf Turnbull circa 2015-2018.
-
For those #auspol tragics that may be interested, the latest in Bean (southern ACT) is that David Smith jumped to a 1,000 vote lead around mid-morning and Jessie Price has again pulled back in front. At COB yesterday, Jessie had a 200 vote lead and that has increased today to 906 votes.

#Australia following Canada in being awesome and also in ensuring that the leader of their right wing party lost their seat. Normally that's a super rare occurrence, but these wonderful elections are making it seem commonplace.
Well bloody done 🇦🇺

I voted before lunch today at the local primary school.
I had forgotten the Federal election allows people to hand out how-to-vote pamphlets up to the entrance (for those overseas, these are party material that tells uninformed voters where to put their preferences - we have preferential voting in Australia and not ‘first past the post’). Local ACT elections have a 50 metre exclusion zone so you never have to deal with these people.
Once I got in the gate, there was a queue that took about 15 minutes to navigate. Four candidates on the ballot for the House and about 16 for the senate. It was easy - the independents got my first preference and the parties got the last preference (well almost, the anti-vaxers on the senate ballot got my absolute last preference).
I then enjoyed my #DemocracySausage (the local primary school would have made a lot of money today) and was on my way.

After an interminably long (and mostly uninspiring) Australian Federal Election campaign, tomorrow (Saturday) is the big day.
While about half the electorate has already voted (early voting started right after Easter), the rest of us vote tomorrow.
What I am looking forward to is … a #DemocracySausage

I see the #LNP are focussing on ‘crime’ again.
For those who came in late … Crime in Australia is … wait for it … a STATE (and Territory) MATTER. States are responsible for the Criminal Justice System.
The #LNP are focusing (once again) on a State issue instead of focussing on anything they are actually responsible for.
-
I live in the seat of Page. Our current MP is Kevin Hogan who is also the shadow trade minister, meaning if the LNP wins he will be the guy handling all of these trade issues with the US.
Page also has Casino, the beef capital of Australia. The LNP want to sidle up to the US but this leaves a conflict of interest - does he side with his electorate and protect the beef industry (which has been a focus of Trump's), or does he side with his party and screw us over?
Interestingly, Labor have a candidate in the area called Wendy Backhaus but I can't find any information on her. The ALP site has a list of all candidates: https://alp.org.au/our-people/our-people/ and the seat of Page isn't listed. I would have thought given the global issues right now and who the opposition is here that they might make an effort.
Does anyone have a way to ask Labor if they plan on doing anything in this seat?

"Former Australian PM Malcolm #Turnbull says Rupert Murdoch’s ‘anger-tainment’ damaged the #democratic world - Rupert #Murdoch has been accused of doing “enormous damage to the democratic world” by a former #Australian prime minister, as senior political figures in his country of birth greet news of the mogul stepping down as chair of his media empire with scepticism.
Malcolm Turnbull, a former #Liberal prime minister and advocate for a royal commission into the Murdoch media empire, said the media mogul had created an “anger-tainment ecosystem” that had left the #US “angrier and more divided than it’s been at any time since the civil war”.
The treasurer, Jim Chalmers, described Murdoch as a “controversial but influential” figure, while other senior political figures have noted that his decision to step down as chair of #Fox and #NewsCorp – but serve as “chairman emeritus” – will still allow him a “big role” in his media empire."
