Canadians who want ranked voting! Before you get excited about Australia’s example… I want to point out the danger of non-proportional, ranked voting.
The Australian example has some very strange results. In Canada at least, where we do not have mandatory voting, I think this would intensify cynicism and disengagement.
Labor: 34% of vote : 56% of seats
Liberal: 21% : 9%
Green: 12% : 0% seats
Liberal National: 6.5% : 10%
Nationals: 4% : 5%Only one of those 5 examples has a seat total that matches close to its national vote share!
Note to Australians: this is your system, and you are free to have whatever system you want. Please don’t take offence, this is just an ongoing debate in Canada since Justin Trudeau scuttled our attempt to move to PR.
And your Senate is a beautiful example of proportional STV!!

Another national election where the population rejected a Conservative party for being too close to Trump!The House in Australia uses an instant-runoff ranked voting.
The Senate is elected with proportional representation with Single Transferable Vote (multiple candidates, ranked, proportional) though not all at once. 40 seats were in play in this election.

Could someone provide a link to the results of #TheVoice referendum in Australia? I saw the news that it failed but no numbers. I also saw it required 60+60 (60% popular in 60% of states) approval to pass, which is a classic way governments ensure policies they don't like don't succeed. (the BC example is the 2004 electoral reform referendum.)
