  1. I see the #Crumbmaiden has defeated #SideshowBob for the #Liberal leadership.

I wonder how long that lasts before the constant undermining and backstabbing leads to a #Libspill. The conservatives have form when a centrist leader tries to plot a middle/right road - cf Turnbull circa 2015-2018.

  2. For those #auspol tragics that may be interested, the latest in Bean (southern ACT) is that David Smith jumped to a 1,000 vote lead around mid-morning and Jessie Price has again pulled back in front. At COB yesterday, Jessie had a 200 vote lead and that has increased today to 906 votes.

  3. @fixatedpersonsunit

About time - well, past time, actually. Bring it on: “Australia's House of Representatives closing in on gender parity with record number of women set to gain seats”. 🙂

Totally agree & think this shift in power (biggest losers being commercial old media) needs to be explored more… it’s a big change in some thinking (some previously set-in-cement assumptions that have conditioned a lot of actions). John Quiggin refers to it as: “the exposure of Newscorp as a paper tiger”.

  5. Australia needs urgent reform to protect our democracy. Lobby groups with deep pockets are flooding electorates like Wentworth with misleading scare campaigns, designed to confuse voters, not inform them.
This is election interference by stealth. We ban foreign influence—why not ban misinformation funded by industry lobbyists and vested interests too?
It’s time we stopped allowing bribery-by-billboard to hijack our elections.

  6. I voted before lunch today at the local primary school.

I had forgotten the Federal election allows people to hand out how-to-vote pamphlets up to the entrance (for those overseas, these are party material that tells uninformed voters where to put their preferences - we have preferential voting in Australia and not ‘first past the post’). Local ACT elections have a 50 metre exclusion zone so you never have to deal with these people.

Once I got in the gate, there was a queue that took about 15 minutes to navigate. Four candidates on the ballot for the House and about 16 for the senate. It was easy - the independents got my first preference and the parties got the last preference (well almost, the anti-vaxers on the senate ballot got my absolute last preference).

I then enjoyed my #DemocracySausage (the local primary school would have made a lot of money today) and was on my way.

  7. After an interminably long (and mostly uninspiring) Australian Federal Election campaign, tomorrow (Saturday) is the big day.

While about half the electorate has already voted (early voting started right after Easter), the rest of us vote tomorrow.

What I am looking forward to is … a #DemocracySausage

  8. I see the #LNP are focussing on ‘crime’ again.

For those who came in late … Crime in Australia is … wait for it … a STATE (and Territory) MATTER. States are responsible for the Criminal Justice System.

The #LNP are focusing (once again) on a State issue instead of focussing on anything they are actually responsible for.

  10. One of the members of this household will be away on Voting day.

So she was filling out her Postal Ballot(s) this morning and took some advantage of ready access to Ecosia to research some of those "lesser known" parties . (yeah there is a hint)

Here are some I thought were at least printable :) By no means is this an endorsement or recommendation just a list of "not fascist/authoritarian" or sneaky religious or chauvinistic idiots or named to misdirect.

Wondering where the Pirate Party is ? They are in an alliance with Science and the Environment...

  11. I live in the seat of Page. Our current MP is Kevin Hogan who is also the shadow trade minister, meaning if the LNP wins he will be the guy handling all of these trade issues with the US.

Page also has Casino, the beef capital of Australia. The LNP want to sidle up to the US but this leaves a conflict of interest - does he side with his electorate and protect the beef industry (which has been a focus of Trump's), or does he side with his party and screw us over?

Interestingly, Labor have a candidate in the area called Wendy Backhaus but I can't find any information on her. The ALP site has a list of all candidates: alp.org.au/our-people/our-peop and the seat of Page isn't listed. I would have thought given the global issues right now and who the opposition is here that they might make an effort.

Does anyone have a way to ask Labor if they plan on doing anything in this seat?

I'll just say this about Dutton and his WFH policy:

He may be rolling the policy back now because it's clearly not an electable policy, but I have no doubt it will come back with a vengeance should he be elected.

Right-wingers like to punish those who go against them when they have the power. Listen when a politician talks of division; a good politician wants to work for all, even if they didn't vote for them.

  16. What's the difference between the tiny Indigenous - Aboriginal Party of Australia (IAPA) from Wilcannia and Billionaire Clive Palmer's United Australia Party (UAP)?...yeah we know...many things...but did you know only one of them is an AEC registered political party for the the next federal election... and it's not the UAP!!!
