No leader is ever above an institution;
Nor are they ever above an ‘Office’ of an institution.
If they are, the organisation is no longer an institution but rather a private enterprise. If allegations are true, this is a deeply grave breach of conduct against the Institution that is ANU, as well as the ‘Office of the Vice-Chancellor’.
A ‘Vice-Chancellor’ and their power resides in following the rule of the institution and the office. It is not a blank cheque to do whatever you want.
This is basic management 101:

Unsure if this was the case with CDU but,…
Separation of Duties and other organisational management processes are a ‘cost’. But it exists for the purpose of minimising risks of widespread systematic problems.
In this modern age where business ‘leaders” are tempted to engage in easy ‘cost cutting’ exercises in the name of ‘efficiency’ and ‘productivity’, … it’s worth also remembering that some alleged ‘inefficiencies’ exist for a reason.

Calls for financial literacy to be taught at school?
https://www.abc.net.au/news/2026-01-24/calls-to-make-financial-literacy-mandatory-in-schools/106257050My op: Financial literacy is first and foremost the responsibility of parents. Schools are already ridiculously time poor, to be expected to add more content.
… but in a society where parents are failing to be responsible (because they lack time or literacy), and government are failing to properly fund and staff schools. Adding more content for teachers to drown in sounds like great idea. #sarcasmfont #AusPol #AusEdu

Ingenious to say ANU School of Music is ‘not a conservatory’ when in practice it is one since it was first established.
And its reputation and connection to international and local music is as a ‘conservatory’.The changes are effectively a stake into the soul of the School of Music, and replacing it with a completely different program. What responsibility will Board of Directors take for the impact this has on the wider community?

Generally I don’t agree with the u16 Social media ban,
But if a ban were to go ahead, the exceptions announced so far make no sense.
All social media platforms have educational value, and all of them have corners which are a toxic cesspool.
The Age verification gives platforms an excuse to keep these corners.

Parental Guidance in Politics:
Yes, Australian Politics can seem like a shithole, dumpster fire, a toxic cesspool, … even for the most pragmatic and respectful adult, let alone a young impressionable teenager.
This is why parents need to commit time into parental guidance about relationships with other people, how to handle conflict, and the value of liberal democracy.

It’s always astounding to read how much toxic (criminal) bullshit teachers tolerate from students, parents and others. Resilience is an understatement.

As they say ‘It takes a village to raise a child’
Teachers and Schools alone can’t fix this problem.
They need parents to be on side.
They need the wider community to be on side.
They need businesses and corporations to be on side.
They need Politicians and the political community on side. -

Will be interesting to compare past and future generations of university students.
Cost of living pressures and other commitments mean students more likely to choose online options.
Online options mean that students miss out on the many social interactions that makes universities great. For some employers, the degree itself though important, but it’s the network that graduates may have developed that is more important.

When Politicians rave about Explicit teaching over Inquiry-based learning, they are talking about purposeful deciding not to fund and meeting the needs of the ‘Gifted’.
By extension, is also means not meeting the needs of the ‘struggling’.It’s about serving the 51~68%. Essentially its ‘Keep to our pace or get left behind’

Trigger warning: reflection on personal experience of suicide and discrimination ⚠️
I am a 2nd generation Australian. Parents do not speak much English. Cismale. heterosexual. But as a student from 14 to 19, I encountered gay-hate. I also encountered racism. This escalated to the point of considering suicide several times. I found myself left alone and isolated.
Part of reason why I didn’t? (Including two failed attempts)
I didn’t feel isolated thanks to social media. Being able to connect with mature people in and outside of Australia who understand the hardship I was going through. I also had teachers who taught me critical thinking that helped with navigating the internet safely.
(There were also teachers that were part of the race/LGBTQIA hate)… the social media ban, is just a feel good measure for parents who are ignorant of the plight and hardship of their children.
I genuinely am concerned for the marginalisation that will occur to LGBTQIA+ children and LGBTQIA-phobia/discrimination affected children who aren’t .
Genuinely disappointed in the Albanese-led Labor party.

Social Media ban in Australia.
Yes, there’s the ‘messy fight over science’ but there also another white elephant in the room:
Suggestions that this ban will effectively affect Schools (intranet platforms and forums) and Games (Minecraft, Pokémon, and other U16 titles) because of the wording that tries to define ‘social media’ 🤣

Some of the best universities I’ve enrolled and studied at in Australia and overseas were campuses with near 50:50 domestic:international student ratios.
The knowledge and experience you are exposed to at campuses with high populations of international students is extremely invaluable.
In contrast, students studying at campuses with smaller international student populations are only ever exposed to international perspectives if they are rich and affluent enough to afford international exchange programs.
Labor and Liberal-Nationals are effectively telling us, ‘Only rich people deserve exposure to international perspectives’.

For perspective, Japanese schools is mostly an explicit instruction based system. It’s fair to credit its high literacy rate on this.
Despite this, many of the Japanese exchange students at secondary and university level that I’ve spoken with have remarked how much more they learn whilst in Australia when given the opportunity for Inquiry-driven learning. Most of them have since gone on to build a successful career, thats taken them to senior levels - leaving their peers behind. The lack of teaching of inquiry and critical thinking has long been one of the biggest criticisms of the Japanese education system.
It’s one of the most valuable elements that creates Australia graduates that International employers recognise (even though Australian employers don’t)
#AusPol #AusEdu #ACTPol #Education -
Said it before - said it again,
‘inquiry vs explicit’ teaching is a political debate led by feelings and not informed expert opinion.Among expert Educators it has never ever been a matter of inquiry-led or explicit instruction, but the appropriate approach for the particular student at the right point of their learning development.
How about Politicians stop setting up Schools and Teachers for failure and make sure the system is funded properly?!
