Look at this... 👀👀👀!!!!
A sweater version based on the hugely popular #AuroraCabinShawl of the #StephenWest #WestKnits school of design.
As some of you might recall, I started knitting again and joined Mastodon, both at about the same time. The shawl was a marvelous knit -- lots of variation, 5 colors but always one at a time,tricks and techniques.

My #AuroraCabinShawl from Stephen West's HKAL last winter. I learned so much making it!
The air has cooled, so I've broken it out for winter. Cosy, lightweight, large, worked in silk and cashmere from #JadeSapphire. It's a great pattern. 😊

I did it! Finished the #AuroraCabinShawl designed by #StephenWest and subject of this year's Hiber-Knit-Along, in which we all cast on, on Dec. 26th.
Hard work, also such fun. A big adventure. Mostly used Jade Sapphire silk-cashmere fingering weight yarn - correct yardage but lighter weight than pattern specified.
Will get better shots outside tomorrow, the color is off in these shots. My CNA Christine is modeling. What a thrill to complete it!

I've been working on the i-cord bind-off of over 1,000 stitches on this WIP... Knit 2, knit 2 together through back, slide 3 stitches from right needle back to left. One stitch bound off. Repeat 999 more times... 1/2

@Ebly Thank you for coming along on this journey! It is taking me a LOT longer to do this than usual. Oh well! It's not a race after all. The chevron section is emerging to be beautiful, with a lovely fluted ridge. Here's a sneak peak.

This i-cord bind-off is taking a good beat to finish. Probably gonna lose my game of yarn chicken on border, but that's OK. Once again my policy of having an extra skein on hand is paying off. Have to wind it though.
Anyway, it's The home stretch!

OMG Mastoknitterati! I am at that thrilling moment - starting the i-cord bind-off. As exciting for me as casting on, when everything is possibility and the adventure is just behinning. Will post the FO later today!

This is it, Mastoknitters! The adventure is almost over - just five more rows of chevron border, then a final row in contrast color (a wonderful mottled green), then bind off....
And then weave in ends. And block. And final shots/notes to Ravelry project page. I'm so excited! I really threw myself into this one. It has been a great knit, wonderful pacing, and I learned a lot. Now for those four other WIPs!

I can't wait to see how the colors and patterns "read" once blocked. I was playing with pushing the shades close together, and further blending them by making 4 of the 5 yarns dappled. This ball of Juniper Moon Farms "Findley Dappled" was the initial inspiration for the palette, and I built the color story around it. We'll see when it's laid out if I struck the right balance!

Every picture I post looks like the last one, but I have to call out my 6 rows achieved today. Loooong rows.
This weekend, wrap up 5-color band, knit deep chevron border. Then block! Then wear!

The end is nigh! I'm just 21-1/2 rows away from finishing final five-color band on shawl. Long rows, but still.
After this, it's 16 looong rows of chevron, then bind off in contrast color.
This knit - #AuroraCabinShawl from Stephen West - has been a blast. I got to do hard design thinking, got to use amazing new yarns from #JadeSapphire 2-ply - cashmere and silk-cashmere yarns, and got to make a thing of beauty, just for me. Yay! 🧶

My brethren knitters, I am almost in the home stretch! Half-way through the last 5 color band, and then the very last section - a generous chevron edging. Lastly block and then wear it happily for the rest of my life! This one's a keeper. 🧶☺️💞

@KarenStrickholm I love your muted palette! I wanted to join in with #AuroraCabinShawl but wanted to use up partial skeins so mine is rather over the top colourful and at first I hated it, but by the time I’d finished I was happy with my combinations born of necessity. It is huge.

Dear Mastoknitterati ~ Finally over halfway hump on the #AuroraCabinShawl! This has been a challenging, rewarding knit. There is only ever one color being worked per row. The five-color bands are punctuated by dropped stitches being passed from row to row and then "forked" with two more at end of each main drop. It's a simple motif with near-endless application. Now for the final patterned section, then a deep chevron band to finish. Design by Stephen West of #WestKnits.

In Apache Sunrise. 50% merino, 50% silk, it's a delight to work with. This is from their "dappled" line, they also have solids. Weight is between fingering and lace. I'm working it now on a US3, in a shawl. 🧶💕

I feel The same about West mostly, but as I work this pattern and watch his videos I'm appreciating that he really does have a strong sense of design. I don't care for his palettes generally. I wanted to do the #AuroraCabinShawl as a personal creative challenge - how much can I tone down color contrast and muddy hues while still keeping pattern visually readable? Here's a shot that shows three sections, and all five colors used.

Hello Mastoknitters! Had to frog (tear out) four rows because I was off one stitch across the pattern. Whoops! Now in forward motion, on slip-stitch section 6...
There are no #IntentionalHoles in this one, but I've got plenty of examples off in a heap!

Greetings Mastoknitters! Now more than 1/2 through this challenging, engaging knit. Design (Stephen West #WestKnits, Amsterdam) is built around his inventive use of drop stitches, creating those long spans of yarn. There is only ever one yarn held at a time across a row - kind of amazing when you look at the result. This here yarn is cashmere and silk, with a soft draped hand. The nicest thing I've made to date!

Made it through second five-color drop-stitch band of Stephen West's #AuroraCabinShawl - yay!! 💥🧶☺️
It was a beast, but getting through it while my neurologically injured hands are healing was a win-win - Fine motor skills are greatly improved, and one day soon, this difficult-but-glorious shawl will be mine.

I've been looking at the absolutely gorgeous five-color palettes people are selecting to make Stephen West's heirloom quality #AuroraCabinShawl for the #HKAL2022 (Hibernate Knit A-Long). I picked up my #AuroraCabinShawl #HKAL2022 after a break and my row counter didn't tally with my notes so I had lost my place. So I ripped out and started over, this time reversing the colour sequence as per Stephen's instructions. I finished sections 1-3 in two days, so I'm off to a good start!

Knitting Nerd Report:
Just 1-1/2 rows to finish of section 4 - garter ridge stripes. Then a mega-increase row, going from 285 to 381 stitches in one pass. Then section 5, another multi-color slip stitch band like first one. That's gonna suck up LOTS of hours. Then another easy 2-color band, a final band of 5-color slip stitches, and a chevron finish. This is turning out to be a major enterprise, all on US3 needles. Gonna need a softball next! 🧶

Good evening, mastoknitters! Here is my version of Stephen West/WestKnits' #AuroraCabinShawl. There are close to 1,000 knitters participating in this #HKAL2022 (Hiber Knit A-Long). We all cast on on Dec 26th, most of us are about 1/2 way through.
It's a five color knit, with an innovative use of Ye Olde Slipped Stitch employed. Only one color yarn is held at a time, mercifully. The many permutations can be seen on #Ravelry. Soooo fun! 🧶🤗

@Pdlaon Hi LL, how is your #AuroraCabinShawl coming along?! I have just 1-1/2 rows left until the first stripe section. That first pattern band was HARD!
I had to go really slow and majorly focus to do it. Still recovering from a brain injury and while the mental challenges are good, it takes something to push through. Also bad neuropathy in my hands. Knitting is major on my road to recovery! Here's a pic of where I'm at now.

@DoubleTreble Thanks Miss Double, I worked really hard on color selection for this one. I made color boards even, in Canva, like this, which is also helpful to see color values in black and white. Loving the whole process with this one!

Greatly enjoying this #AuroraCabinShawl knit! A Stephen West design spotlighting dropped stitches, this current #HKAL2022 is now underway w close to 1,000 people around the world participating. It's a blast to see all the palettes chosen on #Ravelry.
Knitters nerd note - I screwed up when purchasing yarn for this, was supposed to be 400yds/100g per color, and I got 400yds/55g. A friend pointed out "It's ok, it will just be summer weight" and she was right! Thank God. 💞🧶🙏

Gosh I'm having a blast, knitting Stephen West's #AuroraCabinShawl for the #HKAL2022... Five colors, mostly working with dropped stitches, no carrying (just knitting or purling with one strand at a time). I might have to make this one twice!
