YouTube's auto-captions have been getting worse for a while. Today, it rendered @mehdihasan as "Eddie Hustle" and while I'm sure Mehdi's schedule has him hustling about...
EDIT: Just saw "Amish" transcribed as "Officer Justice". Craptions used to be bad, but better than nothing. However, they are swiftly becoming worse than no captions.

I notice the craptions (auto-captions) getting worse on YouTube and presumably other places that use them. It's not just a video or two.
There are some really bad mistakes that aren't simply "mishearing" something. And it can often give something a VERY different and sometimes even opposite meaning from what the true meaning is that hearing people get. #Audism #Accessibility #FuckAI #FuckGoogle

Those familiar with this season will know the captions should have said Joel Dommett and Kumail Nanjiani.
Oh, well, hard to tell those brown comedians apart, I guess. /sarcasm
(The captions are craptions from YouTube. Taskmaster is licensed in several countries. They have enough money to upload with human captioning.)

The way that abled people censor captions when the audio is uncensored really helps communicate the paternalistic side of ableism - as if disabled people are somehow not capable of nor deserving of being privy to the same swearwords abled people are hearing as part of a person's means of expression.

Just watched Deaf President Now! on Apple TV.
It’s a documentary about how students of the world’s only #Deaf university, #Gallaudet, rebelled against having yet another hearing president foisted upon them in 1988.
In the course of just a week they revolutionised the power structures of an institution that had been a Deaf educational community for 124 years, but had never been led by a Deaf person who could sign or understand what it was to be part of that community. Great viewing!

UC Access Now was far from the first group of disabled people in higher ed fighting to dismantle ableism.
Apple TV is apparently showing "Deaf President Now!", about the activism at Gallaudet to get their first Deaf president.

When it comes to sports..they usually lean hard on "overcoming" narratives and rarely talk about systemic ableism.

Wie beim #Ableismus ist Audismus eine diskriminierende Haltung, die ähnlich wie Rassismus und Sexismus eine bestimmte Art zu leben oder zu sein als Standard voraussetzt. Was beim Rassismus der „weiße“ Mensch ist und beim Ableismus der nicht (oder noch nicht) behinderte Körper ist, ist beim Audismus das „normale“ Hören, also die Fähigkeit, Informationen rein akustisch wahrzunehmen.

Morris recalled a photographer who ‘took amazing pictures,’ they said. ‘Then he did a presentation in spoken language. … He put it on social media and literally said, ‘Gallaudet speaks.’ There are little things like that, where people show ignorance’.”

Olin eilen asinantuntijoiden tapaamisessa, jossa edustin Suomen Kuurosokeat ry:tä ja mulla oli mukana 2 viittomakielen tulkkia.
Jossain vaiheessa ohjelmaa yllättäen esitetään videotallenne, johon ei ollut tekstitystä tarjolla. Videotallenteesta ei ollut mainintaa ennakkoon ohjelmassa. Kelan linjausta noudattavat tulkit eivät voineet tulkata kyseistä videotallennetta. Soitto Kelaan ei helpottanut asiaa. Poikkeuslupaa tulkkaukseen ei saatu.

Viittomakielen tulkin saamisen vaikeudet Suomessa 2
Kun ei saa tulkkeja, niin opiskelu ja työnteko on lähes mahdotonta joillain aloilla. Ja ainoa taho, joka voi korjata asian, on Kela. Tällä hetkellä on tilanne, että Kela haluaa tieten tähden heikentää tätä kyseistä palvelua. Samalla se heikentää kuulovammaisten ihmisoikeutta, oikeutta olla osa yhteiskuntaa.

Silloin tällöin jotkut ovat pyytäneet lukemaan huulilta. Jopa myös siilloinkin, kun mulla on viittomakielen tulkki paikalla. Tätä esiintyy enemmän vanhempien ihmisten kanssa. Oralismi on vahvasti läsnä. Tämä pyyntö ei ole OK.

Miksi et käytä sisäkorvaistutteita? kysymykset
Jotkut kuulevat ovat ärsyyntyneet muhun, kun en ole heidän kanssaan käyttänyt kuulolaitteita. Tässä pitää muistaa mun identiteetti.
Olen viittomakielinen kuurosokea ja käytän pääasiallisesti suomalaista viittomakieltä. Käytän kuulolaitteita silloin kun mua huvittaa.

Ei se nää, ei se kuule
On ollut tilanteita, joissa ei ole jaksettu välittää (tapahtumapaikalla) informaatiota mulle asti. Tällaiset pienet jutut, jotka kaikki muut saavat heti tietää kuulemalla tai näkemällä.
Jopa kuurot tekevät tätä mulle, kun en näe hyvin ja oletetaan, että kuulen aina.

"Älä tulkkaa Veeralle" pyynnöt
Tämä on yllättävän yleistä. Monet pyytävät suoraan viittomakielen tulkiltani ettei tulkkaisi mulle mm. näistä asioista:
- ei Veera tämmöstä tietoa tarvitse
- kirosanat
- intiimit jutut lounaspöydällä (julkinen paikka)
- läpät tai muut random jutut, jotka rikkovat illuusion kyseisestä henkilöstä -
Ryhmästä erottaminen
Tapaamisissa ja tapahtumissa jään aina yksin ryhmän ulkopuolelle. Yritän ujuttautua porukkaan, mutta minulle ei haluta kauheasti jutella, koska koetaan kommunikointi vaivalloiseksi kuulovammani vuoksi. Tästä syntyy mielikuva, että olisin jotenkin vääränlainen porukkaan.

Viime päivinä on kohistu somessa Kelan uudesta linjauksesta ja kaiken tämän takana on järjestelmällinen audismi.

- Rejection of Deaf culture or the use of sign language
- Expectations that individuals with hearing loss rely upon residual hearing, speech, or lip-reading
- Assumptions that those who are Deaf or hard of hearing should be held to a lower standard of success in work or educational environments

I’m really ashamed as someone who is moderately to severely #deaf to say that I’ve only today come across the word #Audism:
‘belief that the ability to hear makes one superior to those with hearing loss.’
I feel lucky to have generally not been on the receiving end of much prejudice…but it does happen. And I now I know there is a word for it.

Systemic ableism moves the goalposts so that they can always define disabled people as being outsiders, worthy of nothing but ostracization and death.
If you work, you're a "burden" on the employer.
If you don't work, you're a "scrounger" just cheating to get the pittance one gets on disability.
If you're a chemist, you must be incompetent... no need for Deaf students to get an education in chemistry.
What a good joke, eh?
