I got an email today from ACX (the audiobook production platform) to say they are unilaterally changing the contract terms for how royalties are paid.

Authors need to opt into the new plan by the end of the year. Or else they will not receive any further payments. And neither will their narrators.

Surely this stretches the meaning of opt in.

They suggest that if narrators want to continue to be paid for their work, we should harass our authors to sign up for the new plan.

Que sera, sera. I'm not playing cop for ACX. (The books earn pennies at best anyway.)

When I say that I am no longer actively narrating audiobookx because the industry is a trashfire... *gestures at everything*

*Before some reply guy shows up to say, "You should sue!"... hahah, no I should not.

When I narrated Bitch Like Me: An Erotic Femdom Tale, the voice I came up with for the lead femdom was inspired by a number of screen portrayals of Catwoman in Batman movies and series.

I had so much fun doing that voice! It's one of my favourite voice roles I've ever performed.

One of the first books I narrated was for author Amber Collins, who specializes in macrophilia. Her fans asked her if I could narrate more of her books, and she offered me more contracts. She's been an absolute delight to work with and her fans have been lovely, too.

As an audiobook narrator, I do "fully characterized narration", meaning I perform different voices for each character.

Many of the romance authors I narrator for write in alternating POV: one chapter is from the female lead's perspective, the next is from the male lead's.

That means as a narrator, I wind up narrating sex scenes from a male character's point of view.

As an actor, it's not dialogue I ever expected to be paid to perform before I started narrating audiobooks. Like when the male leads talk about "my [adjective] [very male body part]".

It's all part of the job: it's acting. You have a chuckle or two to yourself and then get on with it.

*Some scenes involve more laughter than others.

I know the smile trick from being a singer. When you're singing, if your pitch is flat, you smile, hard, because it changes the position of the physiology of your mouth and face in a way that affects the sound.

The best part of smile trick is you don't have to change your voice, you still sound like you -- it's you, but with powered up attractiveness.

*This works for all genders but it's men who seem to need to hear it, the dear frowny darlings.
