  2. 2025 is the International Year of #Quantum #Science. #IYQ Although I’m not sure why it is this year.

1803 marks the birth of quantum #chemistry. John Dalton quantized mass in his #AtomicTheory.

1900 marks the birth of quantum #physics. Max Planck quantized energy.

  7. Proposing violation of the 1st Law of #Thermodynamics in #QuantumPhysics (which its founder, #MaxPlanck explicitly avoided), was not the only time "Bohr got it wrong", but it was a doozy! See G. N. Lewis and any #chemistry textbook.

By the way, for #HistoryOfScience #Histodons John Dalton is the founder of #QuantumTheory because he correctly proposed the quantization of *mass* in the modern #AtomicTheory that he introduced almost a century before Planck proposed the quantization of #energy.

  8. This is lots of fun. ‘Uncleftish Beholding’ is a 1989 attempt to explain ‘Atomic Theory’ without using words that come to English from Latin, French or Greek roots.

It reimagines English as Germanic: ‘uncleft’ is ‘atom’ etc.

When you encounter a young person, introduce them to Lucretius' De Rerum Natura...

... and now they possibly love it even more than you do 😍🥰

  11. @la_seletzky @KamalaHarrisWin For instance, one of the most famous quotes from the first #quantum theorist and father of the modern #AtomicTheory , John Dalton is: “Ask an impertinent question, and you are on the way to a pertinent answer. That is the essence of #science.”

The #racist #CNN question *was* impertinent, but it was also profit-driven. In any case, the “#NextQuestionPlease “ answer was indeed profoundly pertinent!

I said I was ‘fixated’ on this!

  12. In 1803 #JohnDalton used the Laws of #Chemistry to propose the modern #AtomicTheory. It marks the birth of #QuantumTheory. (Dalton quantized mass a century before #MaxPlanck quantized energy.)

In 1914, #HenryMoseley used the X-ray emmisions of atoms to propose the quantization of #AtomicStructure.

Sadly, #Moseley was killed by a sniper a year later in the Battle of #Gallipoli in #Turkey. theconversation.com/how-scienc

  17. @mariapopova I believe you correctly surmise “how staggered (Emily Dickinson’s) pliant young mind must have been to learn that scientists had just proven the existence of atoms.”

But #physicists didn’t accept the #AtomicTheory until #AlbertEinstein demonstrated its verity through Brownian motion over a *century* after #JohnDalton proposed it.

Both ‘particle #chemistry ‘ and #QuantumChemistry predate their #physics counterparts by a century since Dalton quantized *mass*!

  22. @selfawarepatterns @selfawarepatterns.com Dalton’s #AtomicTheory wasn’t controversial for chemists. We were well into the architecture at the nanoscale (molecules) before physicists went the other way and explored the nucleus and its structure. 🤷🏻‍♂️

#LudwigBoltzmann was among the first physicists to ‘see the light’.

  23. @mcnees Yes, #MaxPlanck correctly hypothesized that energy is quantized in 1900, and this is properly celebrated on #QuantumDay. 👏

But #JohnDalton had hypothesized, and just as correctly, that *mass* is quantized almost 100 years earlier when he published his #AtomicTheory. 👏

#JohnDalton quantized mass when he postulated his essentially correct #AtomicTheory. ✅

  37. @compoundchem #JohnDalton is the true founder of #QuantumTheory because his #AtomicTheory correctly quantized MASS to explain observations in #chemistry 🧪 almost a century before #MaxPlanck quantized energy to avoid the ‘ultraviolet catastrophe’ :oh_no_bubble:.

  39. @gutenberg_org The first #QuantumTheory explaining the quantized properties of atoms was #JohnDalton ‘s #AtomicTheory a century earlier than Planck’s quantum theory and the Franck-Hertz experiment.

  40. @petergleick On par with chemists trying to convince physicists about the validity of Dalton’s #AtomicTheory for virtually the entire 19th century. Or Lewis’s #ElectronPairing for at least half the 20th century. 🤷🏻‍♂️ #Science is a human activity.

  41. On November 26, 1817, Alsatian French chemist and educator Charles-Adolphe Wurtz was born. Wurtz is best remembered for his decades-long advocacy for the atomic theory and for ideas about the structures of chemical compounds, against the skeptical opinions of chemists such as Marcellin Berthelot and Etienne Henri Sainte-Claire Deville.
