Incredibly high intensity of the devastating #wildfires in Chile🇨🇱 producing thick smoke plumes which are heading out over the Pacific Ocean as shown in the #CopernicusAtmosphere Monitoring Service #ECMWF 5-day forecast of total aerosol optical depth initialized on 5 February at 00 UTC. Noting also smoke from increasing number of early season fires in Colombia🇨🇴 further north.

The animation below shows differences between total column and surface concentrations of nitrogen dioxide on 18 December - an advantage of CAMS is the ability to provide surface air quality information from the assimilation of satellite observed total columns.

Review of the 2022 #Antarctic #Ozone hole in the context of the combined #CopernicusAtmosphere + #CopernicusClimate #ECMWF reanalysis dataset back to 1979 published today at https://atmosphere.copernicus.eu/three-peculiar-antarctic-ozone-hole-seasons-row-what-we-know
The graphic below shows the maximim yearly ozone hole extent from 1979-2022. For the third year in a row the ozone hole is persisting well into December.

Some #SaharanDust transport for December across N Africa, central Mediterranean and SE Europe over the coming days in the #CopernicusAtmosphere Monitoring Service #aerosol optical depth forecast initiliazed on 7 Dec at 00 UTC. The current hazy conditions over southern Italy will be followed by a larger plume of higher AOD over the weekend.

#CopernicusAtmosphere forecasts also seeing increased sulphate aerosol optical depth in the #MaunaLoa 🌋 plume from the chemical conversion of SO2. This isn't ash and is only possible in the model due to the assimilation of 🛰️ SO2 obs - will be checking Aeronet sites for observed increases in AOD over the next couple of days.

#CopernicusAtmosphere Monitoring Service #ECMWF total column #SO2 5-day forecast from 2 December 00 UTC showing the plume with very high values (white areas > 10 DU) from the #MaunaLoa 🌋 Hawaii eruption already crossing southern US/northern Mexico as far as the Atlantic and recirculating over the Caribbean early next week. Layer height observations show the plume at ~8 km altitude.

The #CopernicusAtmosphere Monitoring Service 5-day forecast of total column ozone over the #SouthPole initialized on 1 December 00 UTC showing the final stages(?) of the 2022 #OzoneHole as it drifts away from the pole and gradually disappearing. This has been the third year in a row of the ozone hole persisting throughout November due to cold and persistent #Polar Vortex.

Some filaments reach the US in the next few days and will become clearer as more GOME-2 & #TROPOMI 🛰️ observations are assimilated in coming days.
