The #Rocketdyne RS-25 or #SSME was upgraded to the RS-25D, capable of 104% of the original #thrust.
The #RS25 is being modified into the RS-25E, and expendable version for the Space Launch System.
Rocketdyne’s experience with the SSME led them to create the expendable RS-68 for the Delta IV launch vehicle, though it was not suited for SLS due to the large solid rocket boosters on the #SLS #rocket.

The Kennedy Space Center Visitors Complex built the Atlantis #Museum, they built life-size replicas of the Space Shuttle External Tank and Solid #Rocket Boosters directly in front of the building which held #SpaceShuttle Atlantis.

After #NASA’s #Space #Shuttle was retired, the #Orbiter #Atlantis was given to the Kennedy Space Center Visitors Complex after it was cleaned and prepared for public display.
#KSCVC decided to, using private-raised money, build a new, multi-level museum to hold Atlantis suspended as though it were in orbit.

This #docking system was originally designed for the Apollo-Soyuz Test project in which an American Apollo and Soviet Soyuz spacecraft met in orbit and docked.
The #APAS, Androgynous Peripheral Attach System, can dock to any other APAS system, unlike a probe-and-drogue system.
The Soviets continued developing the system for their Mir station and Buran shuttle.
However, instead of a Soviet shuttle docking to Mir, it was the American Space Shuttle.
In a post-Cold War show of friendship, the #SpaceShuttle was modified with a docking collar meant for another vehicle and used it to visit Mir and deliver supplies and help change crews.

#KSCVC built a life-size replica of the External Tank and Solid Rocket Boosters outside their #AtlantisMuseum.

The #Canadarm remote manipulator system (or #robot #arm) was an important feature of the #Space #Shuttle, giving it the ability to grab payloads or other #spacecraft.
Canadarm was crucial in the construction of the International Space Station, which also had a #RemoteManipulatorSystem, #Canadarm2.

This is a view of :nasa: #NASA’s #SpaceShuttle #Atlantis’ aft section on display in the #AtlantisMuseum, #KSCVC. #Florida with #OMS pods and 3 replica #SSMEs installed.
The three Space Shuttle Main #Engines burned liquid hydrogen #LH2 and liquid oxygen #LOX stored in the External Tank to push the #Shuttle into #orbit.
The OMS helped the #Orbiter enter its final, intended orbit and carry out its mission.
OMS and the #RCS were both fueled by toxic, but #storable #hypergolic propellants ( #MMH and #N204). These components had to be #decontaminated before displaying them.

This view taken from a higher level in the #VAB looks over #Atlantis’ aft, clearly showing where the 3 #SSME engines were removed, as well as silver foil over where the #OMS pods attach.
It’s also possible to see the protective braces on the #payloadbay doors.
#SpaceShuttle #Orbiter is secure in the VAB and #KSC in #Florida, waiting to move to the #AtlantisMuseum being built by the KSC Visitors Complex.

After the end of the #SpaceShuttle program, the #Orbiters were given by #NASA :nasa: to several museums; #Smithsonian got #Discovery, the #CalifoniaScienceCenter got #Endeavour, and #Atlantis went the Kennedy Space Center Visitors Complex #AtlantisMuseum, built with private funding.
Atlantis is displayed is if in #orbit, with its payload bay doors open and mounted up tall so that visitors can investigate every angle.
