Canadian Federal transparency law changes could shield government emails, text messages | #TheNarwhal

Another small example of many, many, many that could be cited showing how Canada's federal government wastes time & money covering politicians' butts instead of just doing their damn legally-required job. Anyone who has ever filed an Access to Information Request or written a demand letter to any minister will be familiar with it. Franz Kafka would be proud.

"Justice Kent Teskey warned the province that courts take a dim view of delay being used to neuter public attempts to understand how important decisions are made.
'The requesting parties have been practically denied access to the information they are entitled to at law and this court will not abet this conduct through the availability of judicial review,' he wrote in a judgment released Friday."

#FreedomOfInformation ??
I am very familiar with the government's methods to dodge accountability... From 2011-2012, I received 2,172 documents from 4 different Federal departments about me!!Read more in excerpts from the chapter, Games "Bureaucats" Play, from my book, #BannedOnTheHill. They are all games I experienced firsthand, while digging for the truth about the government’s interference in my #climatechange art show...

The Globe & Mail just published a major project looking at how broken Canada's freedom-of-information laws are and Alberta is not even included in this analysis because every provincial ministry refused to provide records:

How Canada’s FOI system broke under its own weight
Information held by the government is supposed to be yours. Yet at every turn, the process gives institutions incentives to keep records hidden #ATIP #ATIFail #FOI #cdnpoli

@EtherNRhum This chart is my paraphrase of one question/data in hundreds of pages of raw polling data we obtained through #ATIP. There was an option to answer "Both are priorities" but only between 6%-14% in each region chose bother. Key takeaway IMO is QC vs ROC.

Be sure to check out @thenarwhal tomorrow morning after 8 am ET. We’ll be releasing a story about some documents the Alberta government refused to release for nearly 800 days. The documents outline how oil and gas lobbyists were able to influence government policy in the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic. #cdnfoi #foip #FOIA #atip #JournalismMatters #journalism

Canadian govt cites translation, #accessibility costs as reason for keeping documents from public -- however experts cry foul: "The idea that making completed access requests public would require translation surprised Stéphanie Chouinard, a Queen’s U prof who specializes in language rights. “If I were to translate it literally, I would say the Official Languages Act has a broad back – which means, essentially, that you’re using something as a convenient excuse.” https://www.theglobeandmail.com/canada/article-atip-documents-translation-cost/ #ATIP
