I made these beads at the torch using transparent red and topaz glass, arranging the red beads to one side, and topaz to the other. The focal bead is red glass encased in clear, with fused gold mica on the surface. Handmade glass art from my studio.

Sometimes, when working on a larger piece, I pause for a bit and just make something else, like a random bead, pendant, or sculpture. This is a large, thick pendant bead with a core of fire engine red opaque glass, and marbling in other opaque colors, including teal, orange, grey, beige and yellow. I was clearing leaf litter to plant ginseng and ramp seeds this week when this little bugger popped up. The scarlet elf cup (Sarcoscypha coccinea) is one of my favorites since it starts emerging just as a hint of spring is in the air. This one hadn't quite emerged yet, but the fact that I dragged it out into the light might reflect my desire to see the end of winter. Something simple for Sunday. I used transparent emerald green glass to make these beads, then added a thick thread of opaque pale green for contrast. The punched out brass discs beneath I heated, then allowed to develop a natural patina over several months outdoors. The ear wires are pure copper. Crime scene in the snow. Found this the other day while hiking with the dogs. It's likely what's left of a squirrel. There were no prints around it so I'm assuming the predator was a hawk or owl. There is a convenient log nearby where it could have perched while eating its kill, and I've seen barred owls, red shoulder hawks and red tails in this area. #athensohio

After a miserable summer of foraging in drought-ravaged woods, I've been finding a few gems this fall. This morning I found oyster mushrooms, frozen solid, on a tree of heaven (Ailanthus altissima) that I treated with herbicide to kill. So can't eat them, but it was great to see them. I've used a transparent smoke colored glass to make these beads, along with champagne and white overlaid with dark purple that appears black in all but bright natural light, and some opaque earth tones. Baking soda can be used to create a texture to glass beads or other glass objects. Far left, the only effect is blending of two colors around the equator of the bead, which retains it's shine. Further right, the blending is more thorough, with a "metallic" surface appearance. After a mind-meltingly hot week, we finally got a bit of rain and reasonable temps, prompting this eastern box turtle to take a moment to drink from what’s left of our vernal pool. We've been marking the turtles we encounter to try to figure out how many individuals are on the property (about 20 so far). My move from Oregon to Athens OH is complete. Glass and tools arrived safely, and I've moved in. Next, work on my studio space. Here's a pic of what it looks like now: a concrete block building with a corrugated metal roof. I've managed to run power out to the building. I need to get the bugs out of there, lay down some non-skid flooring, bring in a work table, and begin setting up equipment. My guess is I'll be back on the torch before the end of June. A day late for #FungiFriday, but since I found it yesterday, it counts. This is the first black trumpet (Craterellus cornucopioides) I've found in two years. It's a ragged specimen, but I saw several others starting to fruit so I'm hoping to be eating one of my favorite mushrooms at some point this weekend. I inoculated chestnut oak logs with shiitake (Lentinula edodes) spores about a year ago, and thanks to recent rains they've been producing mushrooms, but overall they've been a motley lot. This is a true story. My girlfriend and I were out hunting morels today. We didn’t find any, but we found lots of spring ephemerals that she picked and placed at the Morchella Altar we built on the ridge. I have several black walnuts on my property and decided to tap them instead of sugar maples to try making syrup. It worked great. I cooked about 5 gallons of sap down to 24 ounces of syrup that is quite good. It has a nutty flavor and it's not as sweet as maple, which suits me fine. #syrup #sap #trees #pancakes #athensohio
