Just replaced an LED lightbUlb on an outdoor light about 2m above the top step on a staircase tat is itself about 2.5m above the ground.

This is, I guess, a fairly normal thing to do ... but when you have #ataxia it becomes a bit fraught.

Managed to #walk about 2.5km up a coastal path today.

With my flavour of #ataxia that felt like a bit of a triumph.

Sadly, wasn't able to make it to the next village and had to turn back. Absolutely exhausted and utterly empty by the time I did so.

But I did.

Fell off again today.

I had forgotten my helmet and was annoyed and frustrated with myself.

It only occurred to me as I set off across the street. I tried to turn too quickly, at low speed. And just... well, fell over.

It was fine. I had gloves on and put my hand out. No significant damage.

Perhaps perversely, the faster I'm going, the safer I am.

That's what #ataxia does to me. It's different for everyone.

Question for anyone out there on fedi with experience:

My mum has increasingly bad ataxia: very wobbly hands and feet. She's got to the point of barely being able to write legibly. Using a mouse is also getting difficult, but she can still use a keyboard at this point.

Are there assistive technologies or techniques that she might be able to use on her Ubuntu machine that would reduce or eliminate the need to use a mouse?

It is, at the very least, ironic that the central letters in #ataxia are ... taxi.

Fell off my bike today. First time. It’s been about 4 weeks, so that’s better than I thought 4 weeks ago.

No injuries except a skint elbow and knee - I was going about 2kph - and felt a bit affronted frankly.

My own stupid fault really, tried to get going up a steep narrow path and never got the momentum I needed. Then the power assist kicked in and I just lost control.

Lesson learned. Sometimes it’s better to just get off and push.

I did something amazing today.

I rode a #bike.

I know, billions of people ride a bike every day. I used to, too. But about 25 years ago, I slipped a disc and was told to stop.

Since then, I've been diagnosed with #ataxia, which affects my balance and co-ordination Those are both pretty indispensable when riding a bike.

So I thought my cycling days were over, much like my mountaineering, football and running days.

Went to a #football match for the first time in years today.

Even before I got my #ataxia diagnosis I found the stairs tricky. Especially in the stands, where there are, necessarily, no handrails.

But I have to say that everyone at the club was brilliant.

It's hard admitting to yourself that you're #disabled, especially when it's a late-onset condition like mine.

Even though my legs felt like lead afterwards, it was great to be back.

I'll have #ataxia nightmares about this tonight.

“This is Florence who we met at a cat shelter, she has #ataxia, she has a brother who walks beside her to keep her going in a straight line. The really heart warming part of the story is they have been adopted together and will be off shortly to their forever home together.

The family adopting Florence came 3 times and she gradually became braver, coming out of her wee safe space. On the final visit she went straight to them and the family knew they had to have her and her brother.”
