  2. Happy birthday to British-born, American #astrophysicist Margaret Burbidge (1919-2020) who was one of the people instrumental in building our understanding of stellar nucleosynthesis, how nuclei are produced in stars & you and I are all stardust! She was the 1st author of a monumental scientific paper Synthesis of the Elements in Stars, which became known as B2FH from the initials of its authors: 🧵1/4

  3. Even quiet #blackholes create winds, new Milky Way observations reveal
New observations reveal a cone-shaped path leading away from #SagittariusA* that could only be carved by a hot wind. “We’ve never seen gentle breezes from black holes, but likely that’s what they do most of their lives,” says #astrophysicist Lena Murchikova of Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill. “Now, for the first time, we see this gentle breeze from the #blackhole.”

  4. I don't generally recommend material published on Youtube, but here is an exception: youtube.com/watch?v=ot1Ggv6YZyQ is the fascinating tale told by #astrophysicist Jocelyn Bell Burnell herself how she discovered quasars in 1967. The presentation is quite accessible given just a modest interest in science, and also grants some insight into academic live in the late 60s. Enjoyable to watch, as that fabulous lady's got wisdom and humor! 72 minutes.

Thanks to @minouette for bringing up the topic! 🧵

  5. Happy birthday to #astrophysicist Jocelyn Bell Burnell! In 1967, as a grad student she discovered the 1st radio pulsar, a highly magnetized, rotating neutron star that emits a beam of EM radiation. This radiation can only be observed when the star is pointed towards us; so, like the light from a lighthouse, it appears to pulse at a precise frequency. She had been working with her supervisor Antony Hewish & others to construct a radio telescope to study quasars. 🧵 #linocut #printmaking #histsci

Turns out a certain well known #astrophysicist hates them.

    A fading dust cloud hints that the once-seen #exoplanet #FomalhautB was never a #planet
“What’s cool about this paper is that for the first time ever we are seeing one of these disks change over time,” says #astrophysicist Tim Pearce. That’s unusual in the field of protoplanetary disks, where scientists usually observe structures that “basically look the same for a human lifetime.”

  14. #Starlink is burning up one or two #satellites a day in #Earth’s atmosphere
#KesslerSyndrome is bad; atmospheric incineration may be worse, says #astrophysicist Jonathan McDowell
Many of #China's proposed satellites are going to be in #LEO at the same altitude as Starlink, McDowell noted a number are planning to fly above 1000km. Were something to go wrong up there, "we're probably screwed."... "That higher altitude means the atmosphere won't drag them down for centuries"

  20. 🚨NEWS: James #Webb #Space Telescope confirms that there is something seriously wrong with our understanding of the #universe, and reveals that there is an unknown #physics.

Excuse me, I'm not an #astrophysicist, but I've maintained for years that the prevailing narratives about the Big Bang and the universe's evolution are largely speculative. Simply stating that the calculations are mathematically consistent and the theory functions doesn't constitute proof.

  23. Happy birthday to #astrophysicist Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin (1900-1979), a trailblazer for women in #astronomy who discovered that hydrogen & helium are the most common elements in the universe.
