  19. I don't generally recommend material published on Youtube, but here is an exception: youtube.com/watch?v=ot1Ggv6YZyQ is the fascinating tale told by #astrophysicist Jocelyn Bell Burnell herself how she discovered quasars in 1967. The presentation is quite accessible given just a modest interest in science, and also grants some insight into academic live in the late 60s. Enjoyable to watch, as that fabulous lady's got wisdom and humor! 72 minutes.

Thanks to @minouette for bringing up the topic! 🧵

  23. Happy birthday to #astrophysicist Jocelyn Bell Burnell! In 1967, as a grad student she discovered the 1st radio pulsar, a highly magnetized, rotating neutron star that emits a beam of EM radiation. This radiation can only be observed when the star is pointed towards us; so, like the light from a lighthouse, it appears to pulse at a precise frequency. She had been working with her supervisor Antony Hewish & others to construct a radio telescope to study quasars. 🧵 #linocut #printmaking #histsci

  41. @spacefeed.bsky.social When a star as massive as Betelgeuse goes #nova or #supernova then the jet of energetic Gamma-ray bursts that it releases, are typically ejected from its poles. If the pole is not pointed towards earth then it is possible that it will not impact earth. The same should occur for UV radiation too. Can any #astrophysicist please verify this?
