So to continue with highlights from our #astrophotography expedition to Gingin, another subject I had some fun with was Sandqvist 149.

Yes, I'm aware of its other, more popular name but let's let the discoverer have some kudos, huh?

This is a dark nebula, a star-blotting-out mass of dust that looks like a crack in the sky. You can see some stars in front of it which gives me a sense of three dimensionality to the usual flatness that I get of looking into the infinity of the night sky, and gives perhaps the sense that it is a dust cloud there, not a crack in reality.

The image on the left I took with the #dwarfiii - 60 second exposure, with a gain of 80, and stacked 40 of them.

That's coming to us straight out of camera, and I'll do some post to it sometime.

The image on the right was taken with the #DwarfII with shutter 15 and gain 80, for about 330 frames - and is the first time I've used a stellation mask.

I think that they look a bit silly - because stars don't look like that and it's a really artificial sort of prettiness that's a bit kitsch to me. Sorry to everyone who uses them - I mean they can look pretty, I admit...but for me they're usually meh.

I thought it would be funny to use one for a dark object.

Stars shape the Universe. The intense stellar winds of a very energetic main sequence blue star push the interstellar medium filled with ionized hydrogen to form the huge Bubble Nebula, in the constellation of Cassiopeia, close to the North Celestial Pole.

This galaxy is called the Hidden Galaxy bc literally it is behind kazillions of stars that are in the equatorial plane of our own galaxy. So, this might explain why it was discovered not so long ago, in 1892, by a man who responded to the name of William Frederick Denning. However, some visual astronomers claim that this galaxy can be spotted with a pair of binoculars from a dark sky. God bless the eyesight of these astronomers.

So this is our closest star, Sol, today as seen from Perth, Western Australia. Look out for auroras, that's all I can say. Check out those sunspots on the left.

This was 11 frames at 1/320, using ND1E6 sunglasses for the #DwarfII

I upped the warmth in Google photos just to give it more of a sun vibe cosmetically and a bit of pop and contrast.

Now, really, can I call it #BackYardAstronomy if I'm doing it in my front yard?

Cygnus Loop

Around 725pc (2400ly) distant, the Cygnus Loop (Sharpless Sh2-103) is an emission nebula in Cygnus nearly 3° across, a large supernova remnant caused by a star 12-15 solar masses (unidentified).

Well, we've had rather a full weekend. First thing Saturday was pancakes on the patio as @rdm had made butter during the week. Consequently there was buttermilk - and the best use of that is clearly pancakes.

This stood us in good stead for the next bit which was to drive about 40 minutes South for a kiddy birthday party, where we joined the birthday kiddo and friends and family for cake and chatting.

Then it was off to Walyalup for us! We decided to have lunch at Run Amuk which does gourmet hot dogs with gluten free options. So delicious! The hot Easterly Wind (Nundat) at our backs we picnicked on South Beach in the shade. It was delicious food but the hot wind wasn't to our taste so we didn't linger.

We wandered to our hotel, The Hougoumont which has tiny, tiny rooms but great, great staff. And a lovely foyer to chill in and enjoy complimentary coffee whilst waiting for the room to be ready. So I did a couple of drawings out of my comfort zone, again ink straight to paper - and rdm read. Then we flaked in our room for a bit before dinner at Benny's (recommended) and icecream at Kuld (even more recommended).

Then it was time for the drone show which was great! A giant crocodile invaded from the North, and this came to the attention of one of our local guardian Wargul , the great rainbow serpent so there was a bit of a conflict in the sky.

After that Rob set up the Dwarf II and we chilled for a bit. I did some astrophotography with my phone which will be quite nice after some postprocessing so watch this space.

Then it was back to the hotel for a bit of a watch - Marcia Hynes introing Rage and then sleepy bos.

The next day we woke and enjoyed our complimentary gf breakfast in the foyer, and then checked out as we had stuff to do at home and lunch with friends to attend.

We saw their travel photos of Queensland, chatted and showed the video from the drone show, and then went home by way of JB HiFi (I want my sister to try the astrophotography with the phone thing, so I'm buying her a tripod for her phone to encourage her) and watched Taskmaster with Mum over coffee and chocolate gingerbread.

I saw a pretty cool light phenomenon as the sun was rising this morning. Would you call the brighter spot on top of the sun pillar a #SunDog ? I understand the ones formed horisontally are called that.

Here's a photo I just took 2 hours ago of the moon with Pixel 4a and some cheap binoculars:

I love this photo because it also showcases what the stages of the Moon are. Just a part of the Moon is illuminated by the Sun from our perspective, but in fact the entire Moon is visible if you are to look closely.

So amazing!

I will try to take more such photos of the moon in perspective with buildings or other "objects". It looks so cool!
