A colleague sent me this picture from the #climate session at the #American #Astrophysical #Society #AAS #AAS221 in #Seattle.
It seems astronomers in the US don't care about #ClimateChange #ClimatEmergency #ClimateCrisis #GlobalWarming #sustainableResearch
Are you serious ??? π

Out of the 13 spectrographs that participated in the worldwide campaign:
- 1 got clouds and did not observe
- 1 got a serious damage on the primary mirror and is off for a couple months
- 11 secured dataβ β β β β β β β β β β ββ

2 weeks ago, we were observing the rare transit of the #exoplanet #HIP41378 f. It was one of the largest ground-based observing campaign on an exoplanet so far.
Today, we did our first #zoom call with the PIs (Principle Investigators) of the spectroscopic data, in order to decide the strategy for data reduction, analysis and #publication. Another zoom is schedule later this week for the photometric campaign.
The data are so great that we believe we have room for 4+ #papers.

When I'm observing with large professional #telescopes, I always take the opportunity to capture #photography of the #night #sky. I drop my #camera somewhere in the #observatory, set the timer so that it takes #pictures automatically while I am busy hunting for #exoplanets. Before going to sleep, I collect my footage and process them while I rest.
This is an exemple #startrail I did 10 years ago from #ESO's #LaSilla observatory π¨π±, maybe one of my favorite
Enjoy !

If you have 40s, give a look at this #timelapse #video I did a few years ago from the #HauteProvence #observatory. It shows the 1.93m #telescope I am currently using to hunt for #exoplanets. This is the very same telescope that allowed the discovery of 51 Peg b, the first exoplanet.
The telescope doesn't have a laser guide star. The green laser is a LIDAR, dedicated to study the atmosphere.

Just woke up from a crazy #night observing #HIP41378 with so many instruments. Quick updated status (from what I just red):
- photometry: so far it seems only @hubble86 got a good weather during the expected ingress π€
- spectroscopy: data from #CARMENES / #CalarAlto, #HARPS-N / #TNG & #ESPRESSO / #ESO are in my mailbox. βNo news yet from the US-based observatories (and India who haven't started observing yet).
We are still IN TRANSIT.

Good news ! after some fear because of strong wind, @JuliaVSeidel, is currently observing #HIP41378 with #ESPRESSO / #ESO-#VLT. Below is the view of the star (in orange) in the VLT focal plane entering the fiber feeding the light to the spectrograph.
I also got good news from #CalarAlto where they managed to observe the target under very good and stable #conditions.
I am not aware of a transit detection in photometry over Europe yet. Weather wasn't great for photometry.

The night is getting to its end over #Europe. Here is the status of the #HIP41378 f campaign so far:
- #HauteProvence observatory: we got ONE (likely out-of-transit) spectrum through a hole in the clouds
- #CalarAlto: all-sky camera showed stars all the night. I've not heard back from the observatory yet, but it looks good
- #LaPalma had lot of cirrus passing. Likely a killer for photometry, but OK for spectroscopy. π€Now, it's time for #ESO to start the show !

We are observing from the #HauteProvence observatory !!!!
Conditions are sub-nominal, but at least we are collecting photons. Let's hope for the best. π€

Me right now awaiting to observe a once-in-a-decade event ...
-
I'm currently observing at the #HauteProvence observatory.
My #night started at 18:20 local time and will finish at 6:20 local time. Before the night, I have to prepare the instrument and my scheduling. This takes me about 1 hour.
It's currently 0:30 and I am working for already 7 hours. This is the equivalent of one full day of work in France. I still have 6 hours to go before I could go to sleep...
