'Personal choice remains central to the case for assisted dying. [But] Parliament should also consider how care shortages, isolation & fear of dependence may shape that choice before changing the law'.
Which reflects what many of the Bill's critics have suggested; not just safeguards, but better health provision, first!

We do indeed need some drastic political changes because the majors are so tied up in anti-social #NeoLiberalEconomics interests that our circumstances are only getting worse as time goes by — whatever time we have left. Albanese’s ill-considered side stepping of the issues around #AssistedDying is just another example of a government out-of-touch (I know not if this is an unresolved personal issue for him, which he ought to keep to himself anyway). I had hoped that the failure of The Voice referendum due to another of his side-steps might have taught him to be ‘brave’. Obviously, #AlboPM needs more lessons before he learns from his failures.I do have a bone to pick with you though Eddy. I have been there with both of my parents. I have sat at their bedside, holding their hands and frankly going to pieces as they slowly died. Thank God for the endless supplies of morphine is my only worthwhile comment. When a cancer patient is deemed ‘terminal’ (how ghastly and uncaring that sounds…) they are transfered to a hospice as my father was or sent home with a nurse visiting for the first few injections (as my mother wished). In either cases they are put on a regime of morphine and, as you say, as much as is required to dull the unbearable pain of failing organs. From that moment on, there is no pain as such, only dream-filled induced sleep punctuated by barely conscious moments when another dose is required; in ever shortening cycles. They do not eat and eventually stop drinking despite their thirst when momentarily awake, they have no life at all. They are ‘assisted in dying’ and there’s not much ‘dignity’ to speak of in that. Whatever dignity means and the pain that goes with that is with the family of careers who assist a loved one slip away from their lives, never to be replaced, nor forgotten. Dying , is dying. One can add qualifyers, but there’s nothing that can be said about dying other than to describe its morbidity. None of this can be aided by ‘telehealth’ my friend. What’s needed is more visiting nurses and doctors willing to make house calls in the first instance — especially where there is no family to assume the last watch in regional areas.
Well maybe, I don’t have a bone to pick with you. This was just an excuse for me to get things of my chest… yet again… 18 years on and it’s not getting any easier.
I apologise for using your column to dump some of my sorrow on you Eddy. And also to those who read this comments. For those who suffer the loss of loved one, stay strong and live well, you owe them that much.

In France their version of the legalisation of assisted dying has moved further towards implementation, now going to the Constitutional Council having been passed (relatively narrowly) by the French Parliament (yet rejected three times by France's Upper House, in a parallel political conflict to that in the UK).
It will be interesting to see what conclusions supporters of assisted dying in the UK draw from the French legislative experience

I’ve had a huge health setback following my move.
My level of function is half what it was before.
The hospital said they would connect me with “resources” to assist with activities of daily living.
There’s a 1.5 year wait list.
MAiD was offered in under a month.
I don’t want to die.
I don’t want to allow the government to euthanize me.
But this is eugenics I’m always talking about.
I need assistance to survive. Help with cooking & cleaning.
The supports don’t exist unless you have a ton of money.
When you try and push your body to do it yourself, you get worse.
If you end up in hospital, they suggest assisted dying.
Am I “free” to say no? Of course.
Does it feel that way when nothing else is being offered?
Not at all.
I’m being denied the support to live while “offered” death.
That’s coercion.
It’s eugenics.
The system has decided I’m not worth saving.
I’m not alone in this.
Disabled people urgently need allies and support in this fight.
And I need some home care.

Now, it is being resurrected as another Private Members Bill, this time sponsored by Labour MP Lauren Edwards.
It will be interesting to see how it plays out this time - people's positions have solidified, but will the cabal in the House of Lords be willing to block it *again*?

Terminally ill Australians are being assessed for voluntary assisted dying in aged care car parks. Others are being transported to hospital to die in unfamiliar surroundings — because the facility they call home has refused to allow it on site.
A new report from Go Gentle Australia finds that 66 per cent of Australian aged care providers publish no information about their stance on voluntary assisted dying. Prospective residents are told about meal plans and fees; they are not told whether they will be able to die on their own terms.
In Victoria, unlike in South Australia, Queensland, and New South Wales, there is no legal requirement to disclose this. The result is people like Rosemarie Germano, who moved into a Melbourne aged care facility with terminal cancer, asked about VAD, and was told management "doesn't support" it — with no explanation and no referral. She spent her final weeks in a hospital bed waiting for approval.
VAD is legal. These residents are eligible. What they lack is an institution that will get out of the way.
Victoria's gag clause — one excuse providers have used for silence — is being repealed. But not until April 2027. That's a long time to keep dying people in the dark.

The failure in the UK on assisted dying is quite dispiriting. Thinking of what lessons there are to be learned for the process here in Ireland, we don't have the same undemocratic institutions (the Seanad for all its faults isn't the Lords) they have, & bodily autonomy has been vindicated as a concept by decades of campaigning on abortion rights, but we might still be vulnerable to social media misinformation from conservative bad actors.

To cast 1280 amendments as "scrutiny" beggars belief. For context, that is more amendments than were tabled for the massively complex, 855-clause Companies Act in 2006. And this wasn't a broad rebellion of the whole House. Over 800 of those amendments originated from just seven peers.

Over 1200 amendments added – more than half by just a handful of members who are opposed to Assisted Dying under any circumstances. Not a single one made it to the voting stage. All were talked out. So yes it was a Filibuster.
It will be reintroduced in parliament's next session for sure.
