A few photos from Sunday's #assenliggers ride with @twilwel, @TheoZw and Erik, going through the countryside of Drenthe and Groningen, passing a shipyard which will launch a ship this coming week (I'm not sure if I'll be there to watch it). Great fun.

I still felt quite fresh when I got near home so I ended up taking a detour until I'd ridden a nice round 100 km (+75 m ;-)

Today's weather was really nice and the #assenliggers went for a bike ride as we do on Sundays. @twilwel, @TheoZw and Gert provided the excellent company today.

My personal target for today was to reach a total of 0.08 Gm on the bike computer in my Mango velomobile, which was reached a few km before I got home. 84 km in total. Not the longest ride we've ever done, but certainly one of the sunniest.

A couple of photos from today's recreational velomobile ride in Drenthe and Groningen. Not one of our longer rides, but I did at least cycle along for more km than my age. There was a strong wind again today so the velomobile's and their much better aerodynamics really made a difference, certainly compared to my ride yesterday on an open bike in similar condtions when I really felt the effect of the headwind.

The weather forecast today was a bit gloomy so there was no #assenliggers group ride. But after walking the dogs and shovelling snow outside our home I went out for a short spin anyway, and it was actually really nice.

Today we cycled all the way through America and then on to Moscow.

A huge detour due to my terrible navigation meant that we covered 26 km between these two places, which is of course a *far* greater distance than that between America and Moscow in real life.

In total, today's ride was 85 km for me (and 10 km more for Harry who continued home from our place after helping me out with apple pie).

Photos from today's #assenliggers bike ride through the countryside with @twilwel . We took an indirect route through the Drents countryside to eat our sandwiches at a cold and wet wooden bench and have a quick look at the wonderful radiotelescope in Dwingeloo.
Today's ride totalled 90 km.

We went to Groningen and back, with (after a few of the usual detours) the Bevrijdingsbos (Liberation Forest) as eventual our destination.
30000 maple trees are planted here as a memorial to the Canadian troops who freed the city of Groningen at the end of the second world war. During the four day battle to free Groningen on the 16th of April 1945, 43 Canadian troops were killed by the fascists who occupied the city.

When I arrived back in Assen I had a bit over 70 km on my bike computer, so decided to round it up to 80 km by taking a detour around the city. This turned out to be more difficult than usual because of an event: the TT run. People were running lots of different distances from 500 m for small children all the way to Marathon length, and this meant there were closed roads and cycle-paths to navigate around. I hope everyone enjoyed themselves. It was a bit cold today, but sunny. Nice running weather I should think.

Yesterday's #assenliggers ride was somewhat shorter than usual. Just over 50 km for me, and even that total was only reached because I did an extra loop around Assen just before I got home.

It was dry on the way to the start, but constantly drizzly rain (motregen) set in for the rest of the day.

Anyway, even we all seemed to loose our enthusiasm with the rain, it was still very nice to meet up with the group, including @twilwel, @TheoZw and Gert who is still absent from Mastodon.

A few more photos. After a week of fairly drab weather, yesterday was really nice. Blue sky the whole day, as if summer had returned.
We rode about 110 km, spent a lot of time chatting or otherwise "wasting time" when not actually pedalling. Excellent.

A few cycling photos from the last week.
Early morning cycling with Judy so we could be back before it got hot. We took a route designed to go past a lot of trees and much shadow.
Taking parcels to the post office for https://www.dutchbikebits.com I usually use my everyday town bike for this. But it's surprising how much it can carry with a few bungies to hold the larger boxes in place.
Collecting bread from a baker needlessly far from home in order to have a nice ride there and back.

A large part today's route was along the historical TT route. This is a route for tourists which closely follows the route which the Assen TT used to take. We also cycled a few dozen extra km. The motorcycle race moved onto a special track many years ago, but there are signs in the countryside which show the original route through the countryside for cars, motorcyclists and cyclists. We've all lived in the area for many years but none of us had actually followed this route before.

Today's bike ride with @TheoZw and @twilwel took us to Bourtange, an old fortress on the Dutch/German border. We've meant to go there for a few weeks, but each time something would come up which prevented us. It began to feel like a curse.

No Sunday ride today. Instead, a group of us cycled to Leer in Germany yesterday to go to the opening event of Velowerk Nord West - a new shop selling recumbent bicycles and velomobiles.

Three photos of the new cycle-path. This is rather nice. It's wide, smooth concrete. It's just a shame that at the end it ends a bit abruptly. In time this will link up at both ends properly and cyclists will have a new efficient route over the 30 km distance from Assen to Groningen. It's been taking a while, but more than half of it is complete now.

Continuing along the lane on the other side of the motorway. This has always been quite a good efficient route, but the new route when finished will be better.
The windmill was never on our route before. There was a path here which could be followed with a mountain bike (not really a cycle route). We used to take a route on the other side of the canal, continuing from the first photo in this set.

Today's recreational ride around Drenthe and Groningen. We started along the existing part of the "new" direct Assen-Groningen cycling route. It's been under construction for years now and there are still temporary parts, such as going a small industrial area. But today we were looking for a new piece which has been finished.
