Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey Gets Big Player Surge Thanks To Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey

One of Ubisoft’s older Assassin’s Creed games just got a surprise boost in players thanks to Christopher Nolan’s new movie, The Odyssey.

Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey has been out since 2018, and according to Rhys Elliott at Alinea Analytics, it has been hovering around 117k daily players across all platforms for a while now. However, following the release of Nolan’s new epic, the game saw a roughly 90% surge in players, hitting 233k players.

The biggest jump was on Playstation where the player count doubled. Clearly, PlayStation fans like to stab stuff in ancient Greece.

Alinea’s data suggests subscriptions were the biggest cause of the spike, because the game is available on both Game Pass and PlayStation Plus. Anyone on those platforms who had an itch to experience Greece could jump right in.

Ubisoft, to their credit, also ran some marketing for AC: Odyssey leading up to and around the movie’s launch.

Actual sales don’t seem to have jumped, though. Alinea says the game has sold about 300k copies year-to-date, but Elliott does not say there was any big jump in copies sold.

There’s nothing really amazing or groundbreaking behind this news. I just find it personally interesting to see how other forms of media can have an effect on videogames. In this case, an 8-yeard-old videogame saw a big boost in people playing it all because of a movie that happens to share a name and a setting.

Still think the character movement in Origins was a bit better, but I enjoyed the story of Odyssey much more. It was good because the game was huge! I finished #AssassinsCreedOdyssey main story + everything else. The game was huge! I didn't get tired of it because I think it's the type of game I need right now, but maybe it can be too long for some people. I started the 'Legacy of the First Blade' before Atlantis. There's a quest in Kephallonia called 'A Great Escape', but I'm not sure when is the right time to do it. Does anyone know?

Finally reached 100,000 GamerScore! It took me just 13 years; I bought the #X360 in the Easter sale in 2012. I chose it over the #Wii purely because of #Kinect. It's funny how gamer pic and background match. Recently started AC Mirage, which isn't bad, but Origins and Odyssey were definitely better.

If what I read online is right, #AssassinsCreedOrigins came out a year earlier than #AssassinsCreedOdyssey, though the latter looks a bit older than the former and the movements of my character look&feel much less natural. Also, the combat is clunky, and the parkour doesn't flow so well. Even the small sections with Aya on the ship were easier to play. Odyssey doesn't feel like a game that came after Origins. It's so odd. I'm still enjoying it, though. #videogames

Le jeu vidéo "Assassin's Creed Odyssey" (2018), dans lequel on peut notamment commander un navire, contient des chants de marins en grec ancien. Ils sont chantés avec une prononciation proche du grec moderne. Les paroles, assez élaborées, évoquent plusieurs divinités et se retrouvent, avec une traduction en anglais, sur des vidéos Youtube comme celle-ci. Je serais curieux de savoir si ces paroles reprennent des poèmes antiques ou si ce sont des compositions originales. Certains rappellent un peu des extraits d'hymnes homériques ou de poèmes de l'Anthologie grecque.

Quand on se croit enfin débarrassé d'un cliché de dialogue hollywoodien, il revient par la fenêtre... On sent que même Kassandra en a marre. C'est d'autant plus absurde que, dans les épopées homériques, les moments d'hésitation et de réflexion sont réguliers et importants pour l'intrigue (ex. Achille retenu par Athéna qui l'invite à réfléchir au moment où il va trucider Agamemnon, Ulysse qui hésite entre deux directions au moment d'explorer une île dans l'Odyssée, etc.). Donc oui, les héros antiques hésitent. Eux.
