  1. It's time for another #AskTheFediverse

On a bouldering holiday in Fontainebleau, and while climbing at Rocher Corne Biche (Trois Pignons, outside the area affected by recent fires and open again) we saw what look like hatched eggs embedded in cracks in the rocks

The area has loads of cool lizards, are these lizards eggs or something else?

  6. What's a good domain registrar to use? I'm currently on Namecheap right now which is fine but I kind of want to save some money on my renewals due this month. Porkbun looks good so far. Any other suggestions?

  9. Open question for anyone with insight...

How are open source / local LLMs (like Ollama, OpenClaw, or llama.cpp) affecting life for average workers in China? Are people running local models anywhere? Or are they just using Chinese cloud services?

I'm curious if "uncensored models" from outside China are being used at all, or, does China have its own culture of clandestine abliteration? Xiexie in advance.

  19. AliExpress webcam specs are wild. This one I'm looking at is £7.70 and is 12MP! But also 960p. That means it must be (at least) 12500x960. Which is a bold choice for an aspect ratio in a webcam, you have to admit.

Also it's only 23mm wide which means the sensor must be HEROIC to get 12500 pixels into that.

(For comparison, the Fujifilm GFX 100S II gets 11648 pixels across the 44mm of its sensor and launched at $4999.)

In other news, anyone know a not-ludicrously-expensive window mountable (via a sticky pad, not by cutting holes) wifi webcam which does 30+fps, is at least 2K, and has decent night vision? Must stream over RTSP, obvs.

    Quick question though:
I’m still getting my head around how Fediverse connections work. When I visit my Pixelfed profile via Mastodon, I don’t see the photos, so I don't really see the point of this connection.
    Am I missing something? 🤔

  32. I remember a long time ago taking an aptitude test to sort out what career path I might choose.
The results indicated that music instructor or minister were likely to be the most fruitful paths for me.
Back then I couldn't read music, and I was an atheist, so I remained adrift.
Now that I still can't read music -- but love it in just about all of its forms -- and am willing to consider myself an agnostic, should I consider becoming a televangelist?
I even have a name picked out: The Reverend Oral Anal. (For those who remember Oral Roberts.)

  37. Weird question for the fedi to answer:

Partner and I are thinking of making some 'platforms' for the patio to replace the current rotting ones. She came up with the idea that instead of 100% wood, which would make them as heavy and difficult to move for cleaning as the old ones, we could maybe use chicken wire in a sturdy frame. This will

    a) make it lighter
    b) easy to move & clean under
    c) allow for water filtration
    d) cheaper to make maybe?

My only concern is whether chicken wire can support the weight of peeps + patio furniture, plants and worm bin. My thinking is that smaller frames will allow for more even weight distribution, but I am not an engineer.

Question: would several roughly 0.5meter x 0.5 meter wood frames (maybe cedar) with chicken wire at its center, fulfill these requirements? Should I go smaller?

Oh, we would also put some of those ikea wood tiles on top for good measure.

More details: it is a patio on a roof, so there is torch underneath. It also rains a lot here.
